You'd think that by now we might have learned not to crown or bury guys based on 1-2 summer league games. I believe we have a gem simply because of the way VJ carried himself in the first game - no panic or forcing anything, take what the game brings, and attack when the opportunity is there.

And I'm not ready to bury a kid like Kasparas. He is in the perfect spot, and might be more of a project than I thought, but he'll figure it out.

Summer League is a great environment to evaluate how your traits hold up against NBA level size and athleticism. The Johni Broome situation feels a lot like the Evan Turner experience, both were productive in college, but Summer League exposed real concerns. In Broome’s case, it’s clear that his size and athleticism don’t quite good at this level, and he needs to adjust his shot diet accordingly. He made Sensabaugh and Filipowski look athletic. The encouraging sign is his surprisingly solid 3pt shooting, which could buy him a long NBA career, something Turner never had as a fallback. He should try to emulate Al Horford’s game.

On a related note, Summer League also exposed Ace Bailey’s limitations. His shot creation looked shaky, and outside of bad shot attempts, rebounding, and the occasional block, he didn’t bring much else. One red flag Is when people say a team has to create shots for a scorer. In today’s NBA,if you’re not hunting a look within 12 seconds of the shotclock, you’re likely generating a bad shot. Jazz is better off having Lauri, Sensa, Keyonte or Collins letting their shots fly. If Sexton and Clarkson were both still on the team, it would be impossible to get Bailey his shots. And Taylor Hendricks is looking juiced up looking for a comeback season.

On the flip side, I wasn’t surprised to see VJ Edgecombe’s performance. His stamina is elite.. He was just everywhere. With a little over 4:30 left, he missed a pull-up jumper, immediately sprinted back on defense to block Jaden Springer on a fast break, then turned right around and blew past everyone to finish through contact for an and 1. You can already envision him averaging 20ppg just by spamming 1-5 PnR in the near future. He was getting wide open looks in the midrange, defenders couldn’t press up. Unlike a guy like Judah Mintz, Edgecombe just blows past them. And if bigs like Filipowski or Sanogo try to defend at the level, it’s game over. He was guarded by solid defenders like Cody Williams, Jaden Springer, and a very emotional Harkless, who looked like he was fighting for his career, but they couldn’t really contain him.

I thought Broome was fine.

he will be a back up big that plays spot minutes throughout the year. If the jumper comes along, he can be a homeless Horford off the bench offensively.

Unless Broome, at the ripe age of 23, figures out how to finish at the rim, I think he'll be out of the league in 2 years. He has intriguing tools but if you're not Dennis Rodman/Ben Wallace at rebounding and defending, then you can't be a total zero scoring at the rim.

Per Tim McMahon. Other top 5 picks to have 25pt 10 rebound games in Summer League since 2017.... Wemby, Tatum, Jaylen Brown

He was phenomenal last year at finishing quickly and from weird angles, that was his thing. Get up a lay-up before it's expected or off a spin or whatever that the defense wasn't prepared for.

But he also wasn't at a size disadvantage with almost anyone, and he will be every night now. His lack of leaping ability on just the basic dump-off or put-back type finishes is going to be a problem given that fact. I don't know if it'll doom him but it makes his window for being a decent rotation guy narrower.

I don't want to count out that he becomes a really crafty finisher though. He showed some pretty awesome touch at times and has the angles and IQ to get there. I doubt it but he did have some interesting stuff in college.
