He's an easy avoid.
Career loser, he's just awful. I want no part of him.

Kuzma was absolutely awful this past season, he actually had negative win shares and negative VORP which is very hard to do, among players playing significant minutes he was 3rd worst in Win Shares and 2nd worst in Value Over Replacement, that's absolutely brutal.
Zach Lowe made a very good point on his latest pod: $20m-$30m contracts - while good for trade purposes - have almost no value by themselves anymore, even if the player is worth that money. The Nets got a 1st and MPJs bad contract for Cam Johnson - and they've been shopping Cam for years now. Powell was just salary dumped and he was in all-star conversations last year. Similarly, expiring contracts are not worth much either, because they almost certainly require that you take a less worse but still bad and longer contract. This is the reality of the market under the current CBA - at least for the near term.
Kuz is $6m less than Barrett and declines next year while Barrett increases. This gives us flexibility - especially as BRI came in below expectations. It seems the Raptors also trying to add a prospect in which gives us more than just flexibility.
I know many like Barrett and he is definitely a better player than Kuzma on pretty much any metric. However, the reality may be that we won't get any value for RJ and as things stand now, we have no ability to extend or bring him back once he expires unless we want to pay the tax. If we're going to lose him anyways, might as well get some flexibility for the next 2 years and get a prospect in. That's my 2 cents. With that said, who knows if teams continue to stay this conservative once they settle into the realities of the cap and some of the contracts of the last CBA era roll off. But for now, all indications are that Barret by himself and outside the construct of a larger deal is not worth much - to us or to others.
