I joked earlier in the thread, but I wouldn't mind seeing one more SG/SF like Huerter that can help with spacing.
The Blazers have decent depth, but I'm suggesting that Cronins focus should be to try to upgrade one of the starting spots.
Assuming that C (Clingan, Yang), PF (Deni) and SF (Camara) are locked in. That means upgrades are probably coming from SG and PG.
However, Sharp could really step up this year and become the primary scorer they have been hoping for. Maybe something finally clicks for Scoot, and he becomes the starting level starter / star he was supposed to be?
I think the “click” has already happened for Scoot, we just need to give him a little time to let it show. If you look at his numbers last year, he was a night and day different player pre-January compared to post-January. Something did click in him last year and he went from being a huge net negative to a net neutral on the court and still showing signs of growth. His efficiency numbers were still negative for the season, but Scoot was at -5ish BPM around Christmas time and he finished the year at -2.2 (huge improvement over -5.8 his rookie year too). Ultimately, time will tell if that growth trajectory continues, but Scoot had to have something “click” for him to show the growth he did last season.
Which brings us to the situation we have with our roster. At ever single position we have a player (or two) we are investing heavily developmental minutes into:
Pg- Scoot
SG- Sharpe, Thybulle
SF- Camara, Murray?
PF- Deni
C-Clingan, Yang
That’s a lot of youngsters needing developmental minutes, and not including any older vets. Which puts us at a conundrum… what player can we realistically get that is worth developing more than our current youth, or is an obvious upgrade?
I’m not sure there is anyone out there that fits that bill, especially at SG/SF where we have a glut of promising players to continue developing (including Thybulle, who I love that you mentioned). So I guess I’m tossing out my summer shopping list… I don’t think there’s a realistic clear upgrade available and I don’t want to shop for any more prospects that would take minutes from the ones we have. Last year we saw real tangible growth from most our youngsters at most positions. More than anything available out there, I want to see if that continues or stalls out.
