Well, I really liked the movie, from previews I expected something way worse. But I am mark for real DC stuff and this was it. I definitely see that movie had few major shortcomings that will probably let general audience down. I didn't mind it that much, but I was hearing that movie really had no stakes, and it is kinda truth. I do not want to spoil it too much, but I will say for the most part, it felt like there were no world threatening stakes or nothing really close to it at all, a lot of the movie was about just Superman's struggle for better public imagine almost, which sounds stupider than it was. And at the end of the movie it looks like world could end, but Mr. Terrific literally saves the day on literal business computer, and he could have done it earlier, I do not know why he waited. So, stakes were in fact pretty lame.
I will say, best actor of this film by far IMO, is Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex. He had great performances in the past, but this was really incredible. But at the same time, Lex Luthor, out of all major DC characters in this film, is the weakest part. His motivation sucks, performance is amazing for what it was, but man, his motivation is being a bad guy. Lex always was obsessed Lunatic, but in this movie he is just that. Real Lex kinda fits that saying '''everyone is the hero in their own story'' the best, Lex always was a villain, but you get that in his mind he is humanities champion. Where in this movie, he is kinda just a dick, his motivation is literally pettiness and he admits it, and thats kinda Lex, but I do not think Lex would do things that he does in this movie, just to be a dick. He endangers entire humanity very very much so, just to be a dick. He is smartest person on the planet in this movies, but he is also a dumbass.
I also thought that ending was very weak, it revolves around the fact that Daily Planet publishes Lex motivation and that what he did was BAD, and we kinda get a montage of everyone accepting that as gospel and turning on on Lex, and Loving Superman again, in literally like few minutes. And, for a movie that was heavily based on Social media theme, that ending was just super lame and unrealistic. I know movie had to wrap it up at that point, but it felt cheap. There is literally like a political talk show news channel in this movie, and in a movie they have Lex on it and it is said in a movie that Lex was on that show many times. And At the end when Daily Planet exposes Lex, that show host is instantly - Lex a traitor... Which made me think, in this movie, Lex is not only super influential and powerful, he is also kinda richest man on Earth or on that list at least, and it made me think, in a different movie, that political talk show host would be so in Lex's pocket, we could make a trilogy of these movies with that guy just bashing Superman and trying to elect Lex as president.
So yeah, Ending was lame, we had these scenes that end with a joke for no reason etc, but overall, I really liked it a lot. Ending and low stakes didn't bother me, it could bother others. If I didn't like the movie, I could easily nit pick the parts that are weak, like I would with Man of Steel of something, but thats not that important. THe most important thing to me, the core and heart of this movie is good, characters are done justice. People said that it is trying to do universe building and same mistake as DCEU, but I didn't see that at all. Thing with this movie, it is not an Origin story at all, it is new DC universe, but it throws you right into it, Superman has already been Superman, he is young still, but everyone knows who he is, hes done this for years already, everyone knows who Green Lanterns are etc etc. So just made sense that these people are there, If anything, I could have used some more DC characters, at the end, it was just few guys. But it is still James Gunn, during one scene, it just hit me - Yeah, this is the guy who did Guardians of the Galaxy, this is exactly it.
Movie was colorful, most DC characters are done justice, Superman/Clark is very likable, Lois is not annoying, she is likable, Nathan Fillion is treasure as always, It is CGI fest and most of if does not look real of course, but thats comic book movie. To me, CGI on Crypto was insane, because I couldn't believe that it is CGI at times, that dog looks so good, but then all the other CGI just looks like everything else you have seen. That dog was some of the best CGI I have ever seen tho.
