It looked like they called some weak contact fouls, but there were some real fouls too. Detroit came out like they were mad about last year's playoffs, and I get it. There was an arguable no call on a shot that could have won them the game. For all the sloppy play, there was some intensity to this game.
My thoughts:
Dink is maybe the youngest player in the entire summer league. Yes, he looked raw and his shot is flat and doesn't fall, but he hustles. He moves like a gazelle out there, like he's faster than other players his size. I think Dink has a shot at being an interesting player, maybe a PG or combo guard type, and 6'7 to go with it. I'm not saying he's a sure thing, but I saw enough to be curious.
Dadiet is the only player on the entire team who can shoot and that's a big part of why we lost big. The missed shots and the ugly turnovers on lazy passes.
The team has a few guys who can drive. Dad's the only one with a legit NBA outside shot. He looks very relaxed out there too and sure, there are questions about his defense and overall game and passiveness. It's summer league. I don't care if he's passive in summer league. The shot looks legit and he shoots with this relaxed, quick release. That's something. And he's still just 19. (he turns 20 in 2 weeks).
Kolek had some good drives. He's creative. Lots of ugly passes though. Too many turnovers, some missed shots. He seemed bothered by the Pistons pressure defense all game. A bad game for TK, maybe he's just not an NBA player. He didn't look like one today.
Diaware is young and raw, but played with some energy. Skinny too. He's just 20 and I'm not sure what he'll become, but given his age and size, . . . maybe there's something there. If it was up to me, I'd encourage him to play the year in Europe.
Beauchamp looks like a usable 2-way player. He didn't embarrass himself, but I don't think he's good enough for NBA minutes. He's athletic and hustles, but his shot doesn't look that good. It's not enough.
Devon (Dae Dae) Grant didn't impress me, but he hustles and plays hard. He's a little small.
Watson does not look like an NBA player too me at all. Maybe the least out of all of them. He's almost clumsy sometimes. He's got some size, but that's not enough.
Huk is Huk. He's a mobile big man, a solid shot blocker and an OK rebounder, though he could learn to focus on rebounding more. He shoots FTs like Shaq though, which isn't great. But for his size, he's quite mobile. He had a couple pretty blocks. Somebody posted here that Sims was better than Huk. I disagree. Huk's not great, but he's a usable player.
McCullars looks like an NBA player. He moves well. Dribbles well, and he had some pretty drives to the hoop, but he doesn't shoot well enough. A couple misses. A couple bad passes too and I think it was Stuporman who said he doesn't have enough verticle and he did seem to lose rebounds and get blocked by not getting high enough. Laterally he moves well, but he needs to get more lift. Still, he almost looks the legit. He's got the athleticism and the handles. There's something there, but his shot needs to fall if he's going to be a hustle bench player.
Nnaji seemed to have good length and energy, but he's raw. A work in progress.
The game was ugly. No question, ugly ugly, especially the first few minutes where the Pistons stole like 5 lazy passes in 5 minutes. The Pistons hit their 3s, we missed ours. It wasn't a good game, but I'm not lost on some of the players.
Dadiet's ability to shoot gives him a chance at being a bench player. I don't think he'll ever be a good defender or a plus NBA athlete, but if he can hit open shots and 3s, we can use him. I also like Dink, I think, more than anyone else. There's something there to dream on, even if he's not close right now.
Well . . . that's my review. And, I know. How can I judge players off one game. Maybe I'm wrong.
