I think the main argument truly is that Jokic was just the best player that year. Exclude team success, whatever.

It was Jokic by a good distance.

Jokic wasn't wasn't the best player that year, Luka was better, and it's an award with no set criteria, it's a media narrative, and the media narrative against him was he didn't win enough, this was the claim repeatedly thrown around in the Hoop Collective, which also do the straw poll and generally set the tone for the award.

Luka was closer to not making 1st-team all-NBA than he was to reaching Jokic by pretty much every advanced stat in existence. If the Nuggets and Mavs had the same record, Luka would have still had zero case. His only “case” was that he held the ball too much and accumulated bulk stats as a result.

Is this engagement farming?

not a few people, it’s one of the most common mainstream takes today. I can’t go a single day without seeing it on TikTok/Twitter/Reddit

even in this thread you have it

And now that Luka is a Laker, the take is getting even more popular

The people who say they’ve never heard this take must be living under a rock

Luka had a historic season, Jokic didn't. It should've been Luka. Luka set the all time record for most combined points created between points and assists per game in a season that year and it still stands, it even topped Wilt's 50 point season. Jokic couldn't handle the load Luka was asked to carry that season because he wasn't aggressive enough and was too concerned about padding his advanced stats, and the playoff results confirmed it

I firmly believe that Luka's whining and constant berating of refs has caused him to lose MVP votes in the past.

Still think Jokic was the deserved MVP of 2024

Just like Jokic fans love to point out how Biid was never an MVP because of lack of playoff success.

2024 Luka >>>> Jokic

Luka took a team with Jason Kidd to the Finals. Led the entire playoffs in points, rebounds, assists, steals. Jokic meanwhile couldn't even handle Gobert.

One year before this Jokic actually won the title and lead in pretty much all the volume stats and knocked out Gobert and the T wolves lol what are you even talking about.

'Biid stole his singular MVP with one of the most pathetic examples of lobbying that there's ever been and right on cue got embarrassed in the post season as per usual. In fact he kind of helped Jokic in 24 because the voters realised their mistake and Jokic got the narrative boost.

No one believed Luka deserved MVP until Dallas made the finals.

It is cool when people make up their own narrative and push it to the world.
