There’s a lot to like about Maluach, but what stood out most wasn’t in the stat sheet—it was in the way he moved. His off-ball awareness is already ahead of the curve. He cuts with timing and purpose, and that kind of instinct will pay immediate dividends playing next to a downhill guard like Jalen Green, who’s more comfortable threading dump-offs than spraying out to shooters.
You can see flashes of face-up potential too. He’s not just a lob threat or dunker spot guy—there’s something there with his handle, even if it’s raw. He’s testing the edges of his game, which is exactly what you want from an 18-year-old project big in July.
What you don’t want is someone who looks overwhelmed. Khaman? He showed the opposite. He was aggressive. Assertive. He competed like he belonged. No hesitation, no timid steps. He didn’t just run the floor—he owned his space. Played with real force.
I came away impressed with his touch and coordination. He’s comfortable finishing with either hand, has a naturally soft touch around the rim, and his timing as a rim protector is well ahead of schedule. He made his name in college as a paint presence—crashing the glass, swatting shots, controlling his area—but in Phoenix, they’re clearly experimenting with more. They’re asking him to stretch, to explore, to fail in productive ways.
He’s going to get knocked around by grown men. Jokic is going to put his shoulder in his chest. Sabonis will carve out real estate he didn’t know he owned. But that’s the point. He has to feel it. He has to grow. And with the right vets and structure, he will grow.
Right now, it’s not about makes and misses. It’s about seeing a young big who cares. Who competes. Who’s trying to learn. That’s the foundation you build on.
Maluach isn’t just another raw big. There’s more to this kid—and Phoenix knows it.
