Penda and Jase showing they belong at that level.
Its crazy that we propably got two higher upside players this year with late picks than last few years with lottery/near lottery players.
If we really hit on them timing couldnt be better.
If Penda can defend 3-5 he will be in our rotation as soon as next year making JI a good trade chip. If his ball handling and passing is better than it looks now Penda/JI/MWagner could be devastating from the bench.
We have many options to choose from despite not having picks.

My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Even though he got 10 rebounds in the first game, he was really bad.drsd wrote:Kelley had a real chance to earn a two-way contract. Game one was promising; game-2, not so much.

Oh of course we are, but it’s our last bit of basketball for like 3 months. So cut everybody some slack![]()
I’ve been entertained by the rookies and TDS which is about all you can really ask for.
Isnt Franz TDS and Goga playing next month?
That doesn’t count

Besides… we’re all going to watch the first two minutes of the first Germany game, realize Franz’s 3PT form is still the exact same, and all start sobbing anyway.

He also seems to play small even against summer league guys, which is fine as it just confirms he's a wing, but he doesn't have the agility of a wing. Just things that turn me off. An eyeball test is always more art than science and I don't really love what I'm seeing from TDS on the intangibles front. I do like the spot up shooting. He's just a guy though is my read.3ddman23 wrote:How are people gauging that Tristan was trash or doesn't belong here off of this game? I get having your doubts, but this wasn't the game to have them in my eyes... Very odd I didn't think he was that bad aside from some turnovers... Weird
to me, it seemed Orlando ball handlers werent ready for the Toronto on-ball pressure and gave it to Tristan (being the old hand) and that isnt his strength or role. I saw him make his 3 pt shots which will be his role.

That's not funny. True, but not funny.
I have to believe that Franz has been humbled enough by the three point shooting to put in the work to fix it.

I think most know summer league is meaningless, it's just fun (if you can get past hearing a whistle every 30 seconds).
Realistically a random set of a few games from the regular season also probably tells you very little about players except for maybe the guys who handle the ball the entire game.

Jase is already better than Cole. Getting two upgrades over Cole this offseason is some great progress.

Cole Anthony has more of a scoring mentality, while Jase wants to defer to others!

Re: 2025 Vegas Summer League Game 2: Toronto Raptors (1-0) vs. Orlando Magic (0-1) - 6pm
This is not really a knock on Jase because he's been REALLY GOOD at what they've asked him to do, but he really does appear to a 6'1" shooting guard right now.
And look, if he can score efficiently and not turn the ball over, there's a ton of value there no matter how tall/short you are.
But two games in, the Magic are using him a lot more like Michigan State used him. A lot of pindowns, a lot of zoom actions, a lot of dribble handoffs, they're making a concerted effort to get him the ball when he's already on the move to help make up for his lack of explosiveness/creating separation off the dribble.
I think he's pretty far off from being able to be a full time point guard at the NBA level, but the early returns on his ability to be efficient offensively, both as a scorer and a ball protector, are very encouraging.

I do think there's a difference between being deferential because you prefer passing and setting up others like many of the great point guards have been over the years, and being deferential because you understand your own limitations.
I think for Jase it's much more of the latter than the former. And that's not a knock either.
He's certainly more deferential than Cole ever was, but I think a big part of that is the fact that Jase is just a lot smarter about the kind of shots he takes and when/where he decides to attack. Jase feels like a guy who understands his weaknesses more than most teenagers do. I get the sense that if he doesn't feel he's in an advantageous position, he doesn't appear super apt to forcing the issue which is way different than a lot of young players.

+1
Everything possible to give it to him when he's already moving.

I think the 2 summer league games are hard to judge because they've put constant pressure on the ball.Knightro wrote:This is not really a knock on Jase because he's been REALLY GOOD at what they've asked him to do, but he really does appear to a 6'1" shooting guard right now.

Last nights pressure was ridiculous at times.... and not the good kind. tons of hand checks and slapping at the ball... no fouls called... well in comparison to the other direction. We still played pretty good defense holding the raptors to 42.2% fg shooting and 30% from three.... while we shot 45% and 40% despite all the hounding which also led to turnovers. The difference was the 43 to 20 FT advantage that the raptors had.
Plus... we don't know how the coaches are bringing him along. Maybe take the pressure off of him in this SL and make sure he establish the confidence in his style.... easing him in. Definitely not worth overreacting about... but he showed some great signs on both ends of the court despite his size. 2 blocks!! lol And winning that tip against Walters looking like he got shot out of a cannon.

Cole was reckless and Jase is measured. Cole’s “aggression” wasn’t a strength.

Re: 2025 Vegas Summer League Game 2: Toronto Raptors (1-0) vs. Orlando Magic (0-1) - 6pm
I haven't really been overly impressed with any of the guys who have played outside of the three roster guys.
Santos terrible. Kelley terrible. Crutcher terrible.
Alondes Williams has been ok, but he's 26 years old and has been on the fringe of the NBA for several years now, so he really should be able to produce in a Summer League setting.
Wendell Moore Jr. had a good 2nd game, but he just doesn't seem all that skilled.
It's just unfortunate because there are multiple two-way spots up for grabs. Someone needs to take advantage.

I like what I saw from Penda. I can see why he was rumored to be a first-round pick. Mosley is going to love him. Long forward is able to cover multiple positions. Plays with great effort, rebounds (we badly need), and even showcased some point forward skills. I can see him being in the rotation next year as packup PF. With JI being unpredictable and Mo not back, he will have opportunities.

you could also put our 2 way dude in the terrible category. Dude has been a ball hog and while he can shot the 3 he's bad outside of that. I'd rather take a flyer on Moore and hopefully we're scouting other teams. Like you said no one has really impressed or been mediocre outside of our picks
A scoring guard.. never heard of one.

what? rookie PG with 1 year of college experience not ready to be full time PG? I think you guys expect an awful lot from a #25 pick.

Jase’s game is trending toward scoring and secondary creation, while Anthony Black holds the stronger playmaking upside thanks to his size, vision, and advanced court awareness. AB is positioning himself to challenge for Suggs’ spot in the starting lineup, while Jase looks poised to compete for a sixth man role. Different players, different trajectories.
