I've seen rumors floating around of LBJ to Mavs, some who are speaking very confidently of it. Does this have any legs?

So you’re in favor of restricting player movement?
Players would come in to league much more polished. If you offer them an extension and they turn it down then you trade them. It might actually benefit small market teams.
restricting player movement absolutely favors small markets. we'd be screwed without it
Respectfully disagree with the current CBA. Before sure, but not anymore.

LBJ isn't going anywhere. Le Narcissist just wants all the shows to talk about him all summer. Same thing every offseason.

Even more so now.
Now big markets can't even go deep into the luxury tax, it's way too restrictive from a team building perspective.

I think he likes it in LA. Plus he gets to play with his son. I don't think he has any real interest in leaving. The Lakers on the other hand may want to move on from him sooner rather than later... they'll need to convince him to waive his no trade clause.

It has about the same viability as any other LeTradeJames options which is to say it won't happen given the Lakers seem to be prioritizing cap space and most of the players on the move (required players anyway) are under contract for 2-3 more years. Plus it'd need to be a 3:1 so the Mavs' depth would be gutted.

So the Dallas Lakers and the LA Mavericks for 2025-26?

Disagree. In the current system, the few players that do move end up going to the big markets. If all players could move, the big markets wouldn't have a monopoly on player movement simply because there aren't enough roster spots and cap space.
Removing RFA would force small markets to 1) focus on running an organization that players want to play for and 2) kill multi-year tanks for good.

Agree.
With NIL I think they should raise the draft age, but get rid of restricted free agency.
Rfa helps small market teams, and Raptors.
If restricted free agency came into effect for expired rookie contracts back in the 90s, we probably don't trade Camby and don't sign + trade McGrady (At least if i'm remembering the 1999 CBA right).
McGradey went to Orlando. If anything, that's a clear example of why mass player movement is beneficial to small markets.

So you missed the part where McGrady left because RFA wasn't a thing when he signed his rookie deal, got it.

What? My point is that without RFA, more players move which means small market teams actually have a chance to add to their team through FA. My example was McGradey signing with Orlando.

yeah it has legs and has been talked about for a couple of weeks now.
the issue is, Dallas is going to have to acquire some expiring contracts, because the Lakers will not be taking anything with future years.

Free agents don't flock to small market teams and this is completely ignoring the context of the Raptors at the time i.e. McGrady wanted out of Toronto - who were a small market team in the NBA at the time - due to being in his cousin's shadow and the team's poor management. If restricted free agency was a thing at the time, the Raptors would have had a much brighter future due to them being able to retain the talent of, among others, Tracy McGrady.
Bad teams need good players in order to make improvements both in the W/L column but also to change the team's culture into a winning one. Sometimes that's through trades but for most bad teams it has to come from the draft because they will get absolutely no one in the modern NBA's free agency and talent is the king of "making the team not suck" realm.
Hell, one only need look at how dire the Raptors FA history is to see how this is a bad f*cking idea for any team not named the Heat, Warriors, Lakers or Clippers to end RFA and the draft for maximum player moment™; even the Kings don't get anyone despite where they play because of that leaguewide perception of clownery from the top to the bottom of Sacramento's organization.

Yeah i'm sure free agents would be lining to play in bottom feeders like Charlotte if we made free agency a free-for-all that prioritizes player movement

Suns got under the tax and aprons. That's what they wanted.
Beal must have wanted out of there badly enough that he gave up salary, in addition to having his remaining salary stretched out over 5 years.

Suns got under the tax apron but extended Booker for 150 million on the back end. They should be getting grilled for this. At least the Bucks bought out Lillard to sign Myles Turner and appease Giannis, Suns don’t get a huge benefit because at some point they’ll have to resign their rookie guys and free agents
