Those last four years are a lot of money for a guy who looks like a 3rd option on a contender to me.

I give it a B mostly for the player option.

Great deal that I believe will age finely.

30% of cap on the new estimated $170,112,000 cap is $51,033,600. If the graph above is correct he is getting roughly 5m less a year on years 2-5 than his eligible max. So a discount, but not the backend discount some were hoping for. Player option stinks but it might be why he took a little less.

How is JJJ getting a few million under his max a 'A' or a discount?

We're getting pretty lazy with the "good players get paid and the cap's going up" response to these kind of deals. He's not a clear Robin on a serious contender, never been all-NBA. Never close.

At some point we need to call out really good players getting great players money, or a tick below it. Teams wouldn't be whining about how restrictive the CBA is if they didn't casually give out deals like this and somehow think they did great.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

JJJ pretty clearly would have been offered the max by someone - if not Memphis, then someone else. Through that lens, getting him to sign for less is a win, even if it's only a little less.

If you think Memphis should have let him walk rather than pay him a max, that's a different story.

If he was forcing a player option on the back year, then you take the smaller discount. But if you could’ve added 10-15mil more this season to avoid that player option? I don’t know. I assume they tried.

Also, feel like paying a couple seconds to dump Cole/Konchar and then at least maxing out the raises so make years 2 and 3 cheaper would’ve been better? Maybe that sets up the ability to lock someone else up on a front loaded deal..

Assuming player option was a requirement by JJJ, so might as well not have the deal front loaded completely… but I think I would’ve tried to make some kind of discount season in there.

As if Memphis, or any other team, had any leverage to push back

Who exactly is throwing him the max? Again, it's this assumption that players like JJJ justify his max or near max and other teams are lined up with their check books open. Yeah, I do think they should have pushed back harder on this. Hell, he got a player option to boot. Deals like this get you handcuffed by the CBA.

I guess my broader point is teams aren't lining their contract offers up with the framework of the new limitations.

Why wouldn't they have any leverage? This isn't Joker. If a guy demands a contract beyond his worth, you push back. I don't think JJJ could be completely confident he could walk into a max when his deal expires.

Jaren finished 17th in All NBA voting this year lol. If the Grizz had not fell apart to end the year he easily would’ve made All NBA just like he was named an all star. Not sure why you think you know more than NBA GM’s but Jaren absolutely would get offered max deal by other teams on the open market.

I think it just a different of opinion of where JJJ ranks in the NBA. If you think he is 15-25 ranked player like most Memphis fans then this contract is not any kind of overpayment.

OK what if you miscalculated your leverage and he walked away for free. It somehow looks to you better than to keep him with 5th year PO and trade him in winter for 7 FRP picks?
