Van Gundy made all of the executive decisions. He's said that Bower did the GM legwork during the season itself so that he could focus on coaching, but SVG was the final decision maker.

That said, hiring a guy like Bower as GM who'd been a flop in the draft was definitely a decision by SVG.

All kidding aside, after the draft night fiasco with the unprotected pick, Weaver and Joe D look ripe for the picking.

Hopefully we can finesse Trey Murphy for pennies on the dollar.

They WERE ripe for the picking, and Atlanta cleaned up. According to Vecenie, teams were hoping before the draft to benefit from the dumb trade(s) that Weaver and Dumars would inevitably make.

That said, Murphy is highly unlikely to be going anywhere for cheap.

None of the three are projected to be in the tax, and only Toppin -- who's a useful rotation player over there and is unlikely to be dumped -- would be of interest to the Pistons; neither Clarke nor Vanderbilt can shoot.

Id be of more interest in getting a contract that we can use in a bigger trade at deadline more so than an actual rotation guy

I wonder if Detroit is in the bidding for Al Horford. Certain connection to the State from HS days, and WC travel might not be what he is looking for at stage of career.

Neither of them is expiring -- Vanderbilt has three seasons remaining on his deal and Clarke has two -- so it's both not the sort of salary teams would be looking for in a trade and the Pistons would risk being on the hook for those salaries if there were no need to use them in a trade. There would also be the opportunity cost of giving up the chance at taking on a meaningful player using the exception.

I think it's unlikely.

Horford wants to play, and he can get a major role elsewhere that he won't get here. He's been most closely linked to the Warriors.

This coming season is a throw away for Ind with Haliburton being out. They're not trading anybody. They're keeping everything intact, continuing to develop the young guys they have. At center, they'll rotate the 3 or 4 cheap ones they bring in and hope one of them blossoms into the starter for the following season. If that doesn't happen, they'll deal with it next off season.

Depends of how Holland improves and how Ivey is integrated to the rotation, but one option could be Ivey+Harris+Sasser for Markkanen with Harris being back during offseason as a FA.

I've soured on the whole Markkanen idea. Just way too much money.
We've got our star in Cade. Hopefully ivey turns into a near perfect compliment to him this season. Ausar and Holland are improving and beasts. Stew and Duren man the middle.
The new cap rules make it so difficult to keep teams together. Once we start paying our young guys things will get hard. Especially so, if a guy in the price range of Markkanen is acquired.
Hopefully our $14TPE can be used on something useful in the next year. I like surrounding Cade, and our young guys, with mid level type guys. Did good with Duncan and Levert. Next summer we'll have the MLE and BAE again.
Feelin good about this team.
We bigger. We stronger. We shootin for that homecourt advantage in the 1st round :nod:

By my math, Indiana would have exceeded the cap and had a top-10 team payroll IF Turner had accepted their offer. Indiana probably made the calculation that they didn't need to bid against themselves and go as high as Milwaukee eventually was able to, in order to retain him. If Milwaukee hadn't made the unprecedented decision to waive/stretch Lillard to create the cap-space to make the offer that they did for Miles service, he'd probably be back with Indiana for 3 more years.
