Marc Stein
@TheSteinLine
The Clippers can still sign one more player to a veteran minimum deal.
Beal’s commitment to LA (upon clearing waivers) is expected to spark movement in the rest of the veteran guard market for the likes of Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Ben Simmons and Malcolm Brogdon.

I mean, might be nice for Diawara to learn a few things from Simmons during his two way call ups.

What package could we offer that makes any sense for MIL? They are trying to go all in to keep Giannis. What pivot move could the Knicks realistically offer that makes sense for them. Mikal/Hart WAS FRP and a ton of 2rps? They would get better offers from every team in the league. OKC would swamp any offer we could make as an example.
It sounds good on paper that we are keeping our options open but, when reality sets in, there is simply no way it makes any sense for MIL to trade him here. We don't have the assets and, they would most likely go into fire sale mode and rebuild. It also doesn't send a good message to Mikal about signing an extension here.
I think Aller is at work and there is no rush to sign the extension yet. I can't imagine they are waiting to use Mikal in a Giannis trade that will never happen.

Maybe they are waiting out of a general due diligence just in case, but feel like it's a long shot, but you have to keep the option open until you can't. I guess. Maybe.

basically this. the idea that a giannis trade can even be had centering around mikal sounds laughable.. but keep your options open

Simmons bringing the ball up when the defense isn't set
Simmons in the dunkers spot in the halfcourt and then flashing into the paint/short roll area?
Yeah, sign me up.

Deuce
Clarkson
Mikal
Simmons
Yabasule
I mean, that would be a nice bench with one starter. Or Brunson. Or OG. or KAT. And so on.

I get that but, it makes zero sense. What if Mikal doesn't wanna go to MIL? Why would he? Now Mikal will be pissed that we aren't committed to him? Asking him to take a cheaper extension then rumored to be looking to trade him? This isn't happening behind the scenes. It's pure speculation to drive summer media traffic to their podcasts and websites and sports channels.
Giannis to NYK is just not feasible from MIL standpoint. It would be the worst offer they could get. They won't sell low. If Giannis asks out after the Turner move, fire sale happens. Rebuild happens. That requires picks. We don't have any to offer.

Simmons missing half the season and playoffs? Risky. I keep seeing tweets and posts that he isn't that good anymore either and he just had back surgery last year.
I love it on paper. The rotational versatility is awesome. The defensive death lineup has me salivating. Deuce/Mikal/OG/Simmons/Mitch? Ridiculous!! Who ya gonna score on?

Just like Clarkson, I will be nervous about this move if it happens. If we somehow LOSE depth this summer by bringing in busts....fire everyone!!

Simmons has a level of familiarity with the Clippers already and would be a great fit with all the scorers they have now.
Chris Paul is gonna find a team he could start for, I doubt it's the Clippers at this point unless Beal comes off the bench

The Durant trade was centered around Mikal Bridges. We give them Hart and Mitch and a couple picks too. It only works though if Giannis is pushing to come here specifically.

Are you talking about the Suns/Nets trade?

i'd understand if simmons is truly up to it. love shamet though.
I know. Anyone can search YT videos.
Here's a one game highlight of Ben with the Clippers and season highlights of Nets/Clippers.
Yes, highlights are selective and make anyone look good, but lets see what Ben "Allergic to Offense" does in these.
Let's understand that IF the Knicks get Simmons, in the depth chart, what is he? 9th? Probably 10th.
Let's see:
1 Brunson
2 Deuce
3 Mikal
4 OG
5 KAT
6 Yabasule
7 Clarkson
8 Hart
9 Mitch
10 Hukporti
11 Simmons
Kolek
Dadiet
McCullars
Diawara - two way
Nnaji? - two way?
Dink Pate ?
We're talking about a guy who will rarely play unless there are injuries. With Mitch, that's a safe assumption.
Also, feels like luck about to run out with OG, so there's that.
Anyway, it's not a big deal who they sign, but seems like between Brunson, Deuce, Clarkson, Mikal, Dadiet, McCullars, there's enough guard like players
I can only see the second video, watched the first half. Pleasantly surprised to see Simmons dunking lobs, and going right at Sabonis to score a little hook. I used to focus on him in Brooklyn just to see what's up with the guy. Seemed like he'd push the ball upcourt well, with his head up, then pass off before any chance of contact. He was avoiding going to the free throw line. That was a couple years ago. Looks like he's become more aggressive again which is good. And he was guarding Jokic in the playoffs when Zubac sat, making an effort.
So yes he's intriguing at vet minimum. On the other hand why didn't Clippers keep him
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

simmons' back problems...no bueno
in theory, benny could be good for the knicks if he can stay healthy

To have a legit wild-card style player for the vet min would be insane good.
