Kuminga to Suns

Post#1 » by gswhoops » Thu Jul 17, 2025 3:56 pm

According to Jake Fischer, the Suns are interested in Kuminga after completing Beal's buyout (https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-on-the-nbas-complicated?r=24a6et&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true)

To Phoenix: Jonathan Kuminga - S&T 3 years, $75M (ascending, TO on year 3)

To Golden State: Grayson Allen

Why? Phoenix balances their roster and takes an upside swing on Kuminga. His athleticism and slashing could offer a nice compliment to Booker's shooting. Golden State gets a good role player whose shooting ability would help unlock the Butler/Dray frontcourt.

Williams/Richards/Maluach
Kuminga/Dunn/Oso
Brooks/O'Neale
Green
Booker/Gillispie

TJD/Post
Green/Santos
Butler/Moody
Allen/Hield
Curry/Podz

[edit: if JK's contract is backloaded, Kuminga for Allen works straight up]

3/75 is too much for Kuminga.

Like this a lot for GSW. Once they close down Horford too that's great shooting in the starting lineup and good depth.

Not really a Kuminga believer, but I get why Phoenix would be interested in taking a swing. Booker playing PG with Green and Kuminga though is a trainwreck waiting to happen. Talk about disorganization and dysfunction in team building. Yikes. But there'd be an overall decent level of talent in place such that I guess I could see Phoenix convincing themselves eventually the right trades would be there to reorganize things. It's not like they have cap flexibility or draft picks to build around anyway.

This is one of those "sure, why not," things you do after getting the second mortgage and maxing out the credit cards.

If they backload the contract, it's really 2 years $48M plus a team option for $27M. It's probably more than he's worth but I could see it happening.

Allen is a better player. I'd have GSW owing value to turn a guy they don't want to pay into him. We can assign some value to them helping the Suns get Kuminga, but I think they still owe on top of that.

But admittedly I consistently value Allen more than most on this board.

Yeah, I think this could work for both teams.

Think even if Phoenix sets up normal 5% raises, they’d need to move on from Royce or Richards in order to fill bench under first apron.

I think the Suns are in a death spiral already, this Kuminga move very likely doesn't change that fact. But if all it costs is Allen and giving Kuminga a contract he likely doesn't play up to then that is a dart throw they should take. Memphis endorses this move as a owner of the suns 1st next year.

I’d rather have Allen too much will admit Kuminga has more potential still. He’s a good fit on PHX.

Allen fits well in GSW. It they can pull this off they should look to turn Moody+pick into a starting C.

Figure if the two teams are talking, Allen probably is the guy for GS. Makes sense. Kuminga was reportedly the crown in the KD trade that KD scuttled. Suns have wanted him-maybe more now that they can reunite the G League Ignite duo.

Could see the Bucks being brought in to take Richards or ONeale off the Suns cap.

Could see GS trying to haggle for Dunn or Ishiguro (sp?) and what needs to be added there.

Ishbia might be the only owner crazy enough to give Kuminga the money he wants too

If it’s for Grayson I file this under sure why the hell not for the Suns. The suns need some upside as their team is completely mortgaged to hell

I wouldn't mind Allen, but this leaves GS with 10 players and about 8MM under the hard cap. That kills their chance at Horford and probably Melton, just about anybody but cheap minimums. Unless they send Hield somewhere and Allen replaces Hield.

TBH I don't think it could be a play in team. Probably 35 wins as the over/under and I would take under.

I think it’s more of a sure we’re screwed why not. They bank on the 1% Kuminga becomes a star

How does this work with Kuminga’s BYC status?

Suns probably need Brooklyn or someone with a trade exception to take ONeale or Richards off their hands

Suns are a train wreck, so they might do it and even pay jk the 30M he's been asking for.
