Lowe/Oram then Shams: Dame back to Portland 3/$42m
Edit: Credit where it's due, Bill Oram beat Shams to it... edit2: almost simultaneously with Zach Lowe, who had it POSTED first!

Also, this shouldn't be right. Surely Milwaukee didn't waive the right of set off with the stretch waiver. They didn't buy him out...it was just a straight waive...

So in theory this will lower the amount of dead cap money Milwaukee has? or would it just reduce the actual money they owe him

I love this for Dame and Portland.
Wish Charlotte did this with Kemba in 2021 after OKC bought him out. A franchise legend going back to spend his twilight years after the one venture away didn't work out

Awesome and great morale boost to Blazers fans who held through the rebuild ever since he left.
Portland looks more and more like a serious team.

"A storybook reunion home"
Ummm... what kind of storybook is this. Guy demands a trade and tries to tank his value on the way out by trying to strong arm his way to one team that didn't have the assets. Team told him to go **** off and sent him somewhere else. He and the new team underperformed culminating in him having one of the worst injuries an athlete can have. Then the new team kicks him to the curb and releases him in an unprecedented move to give up on a guy making that much. And then he signs back with the blazers. What the hell kind of storybook is that lol

I think the Ayton buyout gave them plenty? Should still be around $4m under? Plenty for another minimum or as the 15th?

Re: Shams: Dame back to Portland 3/$42m
This must have been the full MLE since the AV at 14M is about what the full MLE is.
So Ayton giving back PDX money, pushing them below the 1st apron opened the full MLE to pay Dame. Thats pretty incredible.
Dame out, Holiday in, Holiday out, Holiday in, Dame in.
+ we got Deni, Camara, some picks / swaps and the corpse of RWIII
The whole Dame saga is like something from Severance lol.

Ayton buyout gave them exactly enough to use the full MLE.

Love this for Dame. Kind of decision I doubt he will regret. Finishing your career somewhere you are beloved is so much better than ring chasing.

Storybook ENDING, not storybook second act. Lol.
But I don’t understand Portland paying this price to be honest. I thought he was going to be signing for like 5 mill. 14 mill a year, and the first year of that you’re just paying him to rehab, seems insane to me. As much as I love Dame and am glad to see him back in Portland.

Should be both. New salary, minus vet minimum, divided by two equals the set off.
Assuming it's vet minimum of roughly $14.1m, his vet minimum would be $3.6m, so set off is ~$5.2m?
Doesn't get accounted for on the books until after the season, though. So, while Milwaukee can assume that, they can't transact as if it's already done. Plus, hypothetically, Dame could agree to a buyout or something before the end of the season....

I thought that he would ring chase for a couple years and then end his career in Portland, but seems like a good deal for both.

To be fair, he was kind of pushed towards leaving, made a trade request, pretty quickly retracted it, and got traded anywayas.
In reality, I think that he never wanted to leave, but it was for the best for Portland that it happened. It allowed for them to reset.

I don't think money is gonna be a problem anytime soon in Portland so they were fine overpaying him a bit.

Re: Lowe/Oram then Shams: Dame back to Portland 3/$42m
He's gonna sell this as him still being loyal to POR yet they had to go to this stupid contract number to get him from contenders. And in his first POR stint he kept extending and talking about loyalty but then after he signed the last extension with POR he requested a trade at the first possible minute he was eligible to be traded. Why? Because that last extension carried him through enough years of service where staying with his current team didn't matter anymore since he'd be eligible for the 35% of the cap max anywhere.
In summary, he stayed in POR only until it was no longer financially advantageous to do so and ran out of there at the last possible second, even trying to hurt the return POR got for him. And then once negotiating from a position of weakness he seemingly convinced the team that he'd come back for good PR for them if they paid him more than anyone else would. And the whole time he's marketing himself as loyal to the them. This guy is an all time hustler.
