Jrue Holliday for RJ Barrett & Ochai Agbaji

Post#1 » by Bentley1225 » Thu Jul 17, 2025 9:57 pm

Why?
-Now that Portland added Dame long term, ill offer this idea for Portland tp add more youth and the Raptors get Holliday whom they offer Barrett to the Celtics for.

To Portland
-RJ Barrett (2 years, $57.3 million)
-Ochai Agbaji (1 year, $6.4 million)

To Toronto
-Jrue Holiday (2 years, $67.2 million plus P.O.)

Why?
-The Blazers get younger and roll with Henderson and Dame long term at the point. Barrett gives them a buigger guard than Simons was Agbaji can be retained or waived

Henderson/Banton?/Lillard
Barrett/Thybulle/Rupert
Avdija/Sharpe/Agbaji
Grant/Murray/Camara
Williams/Clingan/Yang

-The Raptors land the veteran guard as a leader still in his prime for another couple years as Quickley can play next to him. They could add PG depth with exemption money given this puts them $10 million below 2nd apron or look to retain Boucher on a $5 million/yaar

Holliday/FA?/Shead/
Quickley/Walter/Lawson
Ingram/Dick/Temple
Barnes/Boucher?/Boyles
Poeltl/Mogbo/Sandro

That extra year of Jrue makes this DOA for Raps.

Well doesn't seem like that was an issue when they offered RJ for Jrue when he was a Celtic.

They had a different GM at that point.

Love it for Portland. I still think Portland wants to keep Jrue for 1/2 or a full season to teach defense though.

Zero interest in RJ and Agbaji does not entice.

I get the desire to get a shorter contract than Jrue but if that was the goal could have just let Simons expire.

Why would Portland trade a good player for 2 bad ones?

This team is really capped out going forward and a extra year shouldn't be a deal breaker. If I am Toronto and am thinking about contending this year with a weaker East I make the deal. Jrue is a guy this team needs a great defender who doesn't need plays run for him. I think he will be similar to Lowry for Toronto. I honestly don't see a world we're RJ is a second option he's what he is a high usage scorer who isn't a reliable 3 point shooter. With a healthy Ingram I don't see how he's going to maintain the same APG numbers like some people are thinking

The rest of the Raptors all have that extra year. At least here they get a player who actually makes sense and elevates the roster. I actually think swapping Barrett for Holiday would do wonders for the Raptors squad.

Feels like an easy no for Portland.

If PDX moves off Holiday it will likely be at the trade deadline in 26/27 with Dame back and showing health and efficient play.

They are not moving off him right now because they signed a guy that is out for 25/26. And I dont think they trade him summer 2026 either as they wont be sure on Dame's level of play yet.

I also hate RJ and see him as the anthesis of what PDX is aiming to build more or less. Ochai has no route to do much with PDX crowded at SG/SF.

Between Scottie-Ingram-Poeltl-CMB-Walter, Raps already have 150mill on the books 2 years from now, and thats between 5 players. 180 if you include Jrue. This team is not good enough to be this expensive, and i very much question whether Jrue is actually a positive player currently. That extra year and the loss of flexibility is not worth what current Jrue is capable of providing

I don't think Portland does this for free. RJ Barrett is not very good.

I'd think the addition of Dame makes the Holiday deal make even more sense now. You have a year to continue developing Scoot/Sharpe and seeing what you have at C with the 2 young guys. Then in a year its go time.

Dame/Scoot
Holiday/Sharpe
Camara
Deni/Grant
Big Tarriff/Clingan

You still have Williams, Thybulle, Grant salaries which could be added to Scoot or Sharpe or picks for another impact player.

Yep. I may be biased but I love what Cronin has done this summer.

A team for sale in a small market with relocation whispers would be absolute fools to take the Hinkie / UTA Ainge route of just tanking until the lotto gods give you a blue chip player. PDX is balancing youth and vets, aiming for the type of season OKC had with Gallo and CP3. They are making national news with the Yang pick and Dame returning. The money faucet is turned on. There is upside financially and there is upside on the floor.

I don't think this is as bad for either team as people make it seem. But, it doesn't seem to improve either team. Just making a move for the sake of making a move.
I don't have a cool avatar image because Dame came home.

As Celtics fan, I would trade A. Simons for RJ Barret, then find a way to shed salary trading away other pieces

Raps will keep their 2 25 year olds, Portland can keep their more expensive 35 year old.

Don't see the direction for TOR

I see TOR having 4 core issues with its roster
1) no #1 option worth building around
2) no backup bigs worth mentioning
3) about $1M over the tax line this year, and tight against the tax line next year
4) Too many wings, especially of the SG/SF size, all with flaws, questions of fit

This trade does nothing about #1 or #2, actually makes #3 (money problems) slightly worse while shipping off 2 of the players most likely to be dumped to duck the luxury tax, and doesn't move the needle on problem #4. All while getting older and committing to pay Jrue Holiday $104M over the next 3 years.

Don't really see it for POR either except as a money-saving move that saves about $5M in 2026-27 and $34M in 2027-2028

it would actually help with #3 since We are sending out 34M and receiving 32M. i think if you do 2nd rd minimum contract + 10 day shenanigans for a while then should be able to dodge the tax.

Did the math on spotrac. It has the 2025-26 savings for TOR as $1,688,000, but they'd be right at the luxury tax line with 13 guaranteed players. Once you get past filling that 14th roster spot freed up by the 2-for-1, it does make this year's tax problem slightly worse by a couple hundred thousand.

But maybe more importantly, the easiest path to ducking the tax is to ship off one player at the TDL and take back slightly less salary. If either Dick or Agbaji aren't in TOR's plans going forward, they are the obvious candidates, and the only bench players this could be done with.
