I would have traded Suggs + a pick for Garland asap because he is the (much) better player so far in their carreers and a very good fit. Suggs + Bane is better than Garland. Question is if its enough playmaking with Bane instead of a real PG like Garland. Question is if the picks were too much. And most important is it sustainable having 4 highly paid players without much draft picks left instead of having 3 highly paid players you can afford better longterm + most of the draft assets. But you probably at least get draft capital back when you have to trade Suggs or Bane because it doesnt worked out or because of financial reasons.

If Garland is a much better player, then why would the Cavs want Suggs?

Because of fit. Like we maybe have to trade Paolo or Franz one day when they dont improve their 3point shooting because they share too many weaknesses if they dont.

Fit? Garland just helped them win 64 games. What fit would Suggs provide?

Isnt that obvious? They have 2 small guards who are bad defenders, with overlapping skillsets.

However, I definitely think cleveland is more likely than orlando to say no to this trade because they are giving up the more valuable asset.

Yeah, I don’t want to help them out. I’m glad the Cavs would say no because Garland is not the PG I want on this team.

Sometimes trades are a win/win for both teams.

In a hypothetical Garland for Suggs swap, the Magic would have gotten much needed offense and shot creation from their backcourt and would have still had the defensive personnel to overcome Garland's weakness there.

The Cavs would have gotten much needed toughness and defense from their backcourt and would have had more than enough shooting and scoring to overcome the downgrade Suggs would have been offensively.

Both teams would have made their rosters fit better I think.

On paper yeah... they address their weakness.

But I still think you don't help your rival out especially in this wide open season upon us. lol

Are we legally allowed to sign a vet min. contract with us being hard capped to the 1st apron? Not sure how that works.

Pretty sure we would have to trade someone to free up space.

I buy absolutely zero national media post about the Orlando Magic.

Suggs/Bane >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Garland/KCP. No Brainer! Extremely smart move by Weltman to not consider going down that route when I bet Cleveland initially ask about doing that deal.

Do we still have the Suggs whisperer on the coaching staff?

The Magic can sign a vet min. And that would take the team over the first apron.

As to Oladipo, a vet min salary is pro-rated. So Orlando'ds "interst" would begin at about the all-star week when signing a vet would not take the team over the first apron. And, Oladipo is exactly that sort of late rater addition teams add for playoff runs.

We are hard capped and aren’t allowed to exceed the 1st apron because we used a portion of the MLE.

We can’t even sign a min contract for a player with 0 experience the lowest min you can sign.

We would have to move someone to create additional space or waive and stretch their remaining contract.
