Random Friday question....

It's been a couple years now. Can anyone attempt to tell me how the condensing of the minor league system/elimination of teams and leagues has affected the MLB pipeline? Has it focused teams on results by streamlining things? Have kids been left behind before they get a full chance? Are the lower (younger) levels underserved? Has it been a net positive for "baseball" in America? Negative? Neutral? Cost were cut. Would you do it again? etc. Looking forward to opinions.

It's an interesting question. Almost 5 years later someone should be working on some analysis. It would make for a great project for one of the stat heads. I suspect it hasn't lead to players that would have made MLB being squeezed out.

I would love to see ESPN or a proper journalist do a deepdive on this.

I assume it would be very very hard to figure out if teams were missing out on late bloomers because there weren't enough spots/reps for them.

I assume it would be very very hard to figure out if teams were missing out on late bloomers because there weren't enough spots/reps for them.

I suppose you could look, as a proxy, at the number of late round picks who end up making it to the show, which would give you some idea of late bloomers. But even then, they also cut the draft rounds down to only 20.

I might as well put this here: Regarding the Jays deadline deals, as either a buyer or seller, very few prospects traded or acquired have really moved the needle since the Jays traded Woods Richardson in a package to acquire Barrios. Any other prospects the Jays have dealt in recent years who have touched the majors have been fringy, except, I suppose Rowdy Tellez, though he wasn't exactly an instant star and is often platooned - ie benched - against left handed starters (as he was last night). Among the players acquired by the Jays in last year's fire sale, I'd say Wagner followed by Loperfido are the only MLB contributors. Jake Bloss might have been a factor this season but he's now shelved with TJ. Jonatan Clase is young enough that he might hang around until Myles Straw is gone.

A couple of other, like RJ Schreck and Yohendrick Pinango, have been promoted to AAA, but don't really have a pathway to the majors with Toronto. They might intrigue other teams this deadline, and fill out a package.

The Boston package for Jansen focused on younger players. The one having a solid promotable season is probably infielder Cutter Coffey at Vancouver. The 41st overall pick in the 2022 draft, he's mixing contact with a bit of power.

I'd say the Jays are in a good place to make deadline deals, though it looks like a seller's market and the price for good rentals might be pricier than last season.

As of right now how sure are we that the Jays prospects are that appealing to other teams. Look at their top 5:

Bloss-injuries
Ricky-injuries
Orelvis- where tf is this guy?
Yesavage- struggling, but way to early to tell
Nimmala- struggling and still so young.

I've noted that Edward Duran has a tremendous arm gunning down runners, led the FSL and is now adding to his total for the season at Vancouver. He's also adapting well as a batter.
