I think the ref emphasis is on potential for injury. Boo Buie and Martin went for a ball and Martin was a touch late and it ended with Buie leaving the game.

I think I understand the logic because Buie got hurt. I don't think they call it in the reg season but this was a physical game with Liddell provoking fights. They want to set a tone with young players.

Overall refs just need to make calls on the spot and not rely on reviews so much. Trust your gut and move on not make it a 10 min review. Every other sport doesn't have this review problem that the NBA has.

WNBA

WNBA games are just hard to watch. There seems to be so much bias there and some of the same inconsistency as the NBA.

I do think Euroleague games, hell FIBA games all move forward more efficiently than the NBA. It's the NBA that gives so much camera time and convo time to referees who still make mistakes.

It's like the league wanted to be more accountable, but they make it a showcase for referees who fans and players still can't stand. Maybe AI fixes this problem or maybe they cutdown time alloted to reviews, but it is so weird having the game played at unreal pace but then you have referees needing four different camera angles and a team in Newark to tell them what they are seeing.

Not a fan of Martin's game tbh

did he look/play better in college?

Well he was always on winning teams with two Final Four appearances and was making plays on both teams. He is also physically ready for the NBA. In a proper NBA offense he can be an off all threat which is good in this offense.

That said, he cannot handle the ball at all. He can get into a shot, but he gets jammed up on drives and will pick up his dribble. He needs a summer with a pro trainer to get that handle better.

He’s only had one bad game.

He’s been terrific defensively. Offensively, he’s been a mixed bag.

Martin is like a more vicious Norman Powell.

I had the same takeaway. His handles are not good enough for a guy his size. He'll have a hard time sticking in the NBA if he doesn't make noticeable improvements in that area

I've been watching the Valkyries games, and they've been a lot of fun. New franchise (my favorite WNBA team for one year and one year only!), and they seem to be winning games due to hustle and defense more than star power. Watching the women play has been more engaging than watching the Raptors muck about last year ever was.

I think the biggest distance between enjoying WNBA games and not enjoying them is knowing the players. Most people that watch for a few minutes and bail never take the time to actually learn who the players are, what their personalities (on court or off) are like, what their game is like. I tried multiple times, and while I was able to appreciate their skill, I'd notice the lack of dunks, and change the channel. Now that I've given them a chance, it's a lot of fun. And because the Valkyries are an expansion club that balls, every game has been competitive.

Alijah Martin hasn't lost a recorded game of any kind since February. I'm pretty sure that's longer than any player in the NBA.
