Hardly a needle mover but a solid pick up. He's basically just a slightly better version of Gabe Vincent, solid defender who can shoot the three at a decent clip. At that contract and in a very specific role he can help.

Underrated part of this move is that Bronny gets a mentor so that he can take on a similar role for this team in a year or two.

No one wanted those guys at their original salary number... majority of the league would LOVE them at their current salary number.

Re: [Shams] Marcus Smart to the L.A. Lakers 2 years/$11 million, after Wizards buyout
This move I like!
It's hard to evaluate Smart, as he's been hurt the past 2 years. If his health can bounce back, he's only 31 and pre-injuries he was one of the very best defensive guards in the NBA, with versatile utility on offense if you keep him in the right role.
Think how big and beefy the Lakers can be in the backcourt with Luka and Smart. They'll be hell to play against for small backcourt. Also Smart is a good paint helper, which is important on a team that really lacks rim protection.
Smart/Luka/Lebron/Rui/Ayton... that's a lot of strong size. He's also a nice counterbalance to Reaves in that he be a playmaker but not struggle on defense. He'll help Reaves and Luka a lot. Smart averaged 6.3 assists last time he was healthy for a full season.

Smart is a 6'3 guard that is over 30, hasn't been healthy in 2 seasons, and relied on athleticism. Of course Tor-Raps cries about it
Ayton and Smart - such bonafide stars that their teams bought them out. How could the league let the Lakers get away with this again! Adam Silver, put a stop to this like stern did to the Chris Paul trade!

Maisa Hallum can be happy now since she is back in California.
Happy wife, happy life.
Good move for the Lakers. Marcus Smart can add toughness and help others if he is willing to mentorship.

"Slightly better version of Gabe Vincent" is pretty rude to a former DPOY who averaged 15 and 6 during the playoffs on a team that went to the finals. I assume you're saying he's washed due to injury?

Ayton/Smart were considered negative assets due to their previous contracts. They are really good assets at their current price, which is why many teams were interested in getting them.

Flatly, yes. He's not the same Marcus Smart that was an All Defensive Guard and DPOY. Injuries have worn his body down immensely. It's a solid pick up because the Lakers need more defensive guards when they have Luka and Reaves but they're getting basically what they get in Gabe Vincent; a solid defender who can shoot and give you 15-20 solid back up minutes.

I like the pickup for them. Definitely brings things they lack in.

Are Smart's injury just freak accidents or is it one of those "lingering issues" thing?

That's actually even more reason that this signing works.
Smart is the PERFECT mentor for Bronny.

Amazed he got above vet min honestly. Even if he was healthy enough to play, I don’t get the fit at all with LeBron and Luka.

To be fair, he's also been playing with a tanking team.
He will undoubtedly make a much better impact on a contender. And he won't need to play big minutes either.

This. Lakers have a pretty decent squad this year and still have tradable expiring contracts and picks available.

Yeah but these past 2 years... were his problems lingering or just " rest and heal " type of thing?
Unless you are saying Smart is like our own WCJr.. always another injury from eyes to elblow to knees and ankle?
