He’s past his prime and injury prone but the Lakers are limited in the number of moves they can make. It’s a solid gamble on their part, even if/when Smart gets injured. It’s only 2 years, only 11M, and it didn’t cost them anything.

You mean "How much help does Luka need?" ? He is the #1 option.

Don't like seeing Marcus on the Lakers but i want him to be happy. He has gone through a lot lately. Hopefully, he will remain healthy.

looking back, what a fail of a trade for the Grizzlies tho. looked dumb at the time but was even worse than we could have imagined.
they traded the 25th pick in 2023 and the 14th pick in 2024 for Smart then used the 18th pick in 2025 to dump him.
played in 39 games

Smart sucked when he was good.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

That's maybe a good roster but it depends on a lot of things.

As usual; Lebron, Lakers management and the most importantly the fans are living 5 years in the past. Every other NBA team; good riddance.

Not even hating, I loved Lakers off season two years ago when they got Reeves back on that number. This is like a C offseason.
ayton such a bum he got bought out and blazers ate a bunch of dead money to just get him off the team. who even is jake laravia? smart had to have a first attached to trade him in February

They didn't add these 3 w/o a cost, they gave up DFS who is a better player than any of these 3.

Highest on/off on the team by far, his defensive playmaking made their pretend defense work and very good spot up shooter on offense who knows to pick his spots for Luka to find him.

Lol DFS is an okay role player, Ayton is a star they're not even comparable.

GeorgeMarcus wrote:Nice deal for the Lakers... I think? He sort of disappeared completely post-Boston but if he's essentially the same player then yeah great deal
Here’s the honest truth. If you can get him to buy in as just being a defense guy and not shooting the ball consistently then you’re getting someone who is a valuable role player. The problem is that if you’re getting the Boston version of Marcus he’s going to fight to take that shot at the end of the game. He more or less hindered the growth of Tatum Brown and White. That’s why despite the clamoring on the Celtics board, not taking him back was the right decision. It wouldn’t have worked because even though they won a title without him, they are still “his team” and would have expected to be the captain again.
So if they can rein him in then sure it’s a good move I just don’t think this guy will ever win a title. For every “winning play” he made with the Celtics he made 3 bonehead ones to even it out.

On what planet is Ayton a star player? It sure as hell ain’t earth.

DFS will be missed surely. Loved his defense and bbiq playing next to Luka.
That’s said, Lakers really needed to upgrade their center and went from starting Hayes to adding Ayton, a sure lob threat with warts but still a lot of upside.
Smart, it’s on BAE deal! As our defensive player, What’s not to like?
LaRavia is hopefully the DFS replacement. Lot of smart people think he is underrated so we will see soon enough.
Overall, lost DFS but added a starting center, kept Hayes as backup, then added LaRavia for wing help and Smart as our POA defender we lost trading away Max Christie last year.
Then added Adou as our freak athlete in the draft.
Lots to love here and still not done.
Not Yo Ham Lakers!

People are hating on these moves because it's the Lakers. The most loved and hated team in the NBA.
Truth is, they have haven't used any of their trade assets (little they have) to land these players. That alone makes this a great offseason. All these players have options after this season as well, which means if James leaves, they'll have a lot of flexibility next offseason to retool properly.
Also, Luka wanted Ayton and Smart. Gotta keep your star player happy.
