Re: Hacking how WeltHam choose players for the Magic
I think in general, WeHam gravitate towards players with positional size and that have great basketball brains. And they tend to stay away from exceptional athletes who don't really process what's going on on the court around them very well. That would be my best bet to predict picks going forward.

Re: Hacking how WeltHam choose players for the Magic
right now its pretty obvious as Welt said himslef
we draft the person not the player and its the most importand thing for us here
so in esence we could say high character and positional size which is basicly proven now

Just bumping this thread for shïts and giggles.
The theory was that since Cole Anthony, Weltman was picking players who played in a pro league and/or whose parents were pro players/coaches.
Updated status:
Black - Dad former pro player
Howard - Dad former pro player & current coach
Da Silva - ?? Doesn't seem to fit
Richardson - Dad former pro player
Penda - Played in a pro league (Dad also a coach)

Yeah, he was quote a big deal for Baylor and then became a journeyman pro.
Interesting to see how there does seem to be a pattern here tho.

I believe someone asked them about this and they didnexplain how people with the pedigree see the discipline etc early on. Thats why it plays a part if their selection process

Just out of curiosity have you only looked at the magic with this line of thinking? I'm curious if it's just the magic

TDS's father was not a pro player, but he was a pro boxer that moved from Brazil to Germany.

Back when I noticed this I went checking to see if it was common to all teams. I tried a couple of random teams and none of the first 2 or 3 I picked were only drafting kids with pro experience (either direct or via a pro hooper parent). So I left it at that.
It's true to say that every year there are several kids in the draft who would qualify. But by no means all of them. If you had this as a firm criterion, it would exclude quite a number of players from your board. Given TdS doesn't seem to fit, maybe its not as firm for the Magic as it first seemed.

The DeVos family are also based in Grand Rapids. Guess what universities are less than a couple hours from there?

Re: Hacking how WeltHam choose players for the Magic
I don’t think we need to hack anything. He has been pretty clear where his head is at with getting players. He wants high BBIQ and looks for high character traits. Players that grow up with coaches or players as parents are more likely to have. They get advanced coaching from a very young age and have successful role models that instill good values. Bill simmons said something on his Bane trade podcast that I found interesting. OKC and now Orlando are both prioritizing the “quiet assassin” archetype it’s players that do their job and can all be trusted making decisions with the ball in their hand. They can all be trusted to make right basketball play and very much are low profile personalities that are hyper competitive.
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

Re: Hacking how WeltHam choose players for the Magic
ESPN ranked all 30 NBA teams based on their worse management move.
Orlando was #20 for drafting Howard; for all the reasons we all bark about.
What's interesting here is that the Bulls are #8 for trading for Vučević. Well: clearly Weltman "won" this bad-list if he hosed a team more than he was hosed

20. Orlando Magic
Biggest mistake: Drafting Jett Howard (2023)
Two seasons into his career, No. 11 pick Howard is averaging 3.8 points per game and making just 29% of his 3-point attempts. He has played 14 total minutes across two playoff series.
Howard's selection was a fiasco for the Magic for three reasons. First, he was a reach at the time (he went 20th in ESPN's final mock draft), and the gamble hasn't paid off.
Second, his stalled development is a particular problem because Orlando -- which ranked 25th in 3-point shooting the year before Howard's arrival, 24th his rookie year and 30th last season -- thought he could help correct its longtime struggles. He hasn't. And third, players picked soon after Howard include Dereck Lively II (12th), Gradey Dick (13th), Jordan Hawkins (14th) and Brandin Podziemski (19th), all of whom have contributed much more than Howard in the NBA.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. When you reach for a guy and miss badly it stings more than missing on a player the other 29 GMs would've picked at that spot too. But Jeff sits on mistakes so I guess Jett will be here for a while before fading into the basketball ether.
