Re: Welcome to Boston, Neemias Queta!!!
Queta makes 5/10 from 3 here.
This kind of reminds me of when we see all those vids during the summer of 2023 of Time Lord working on his jumper and perimeter game. Then we traded Rob for Jrue.
This time it's different, though. This time we're keeping Queta and he is much less injury prone than Rob. So I watch this and actually feel optimism that he may take the next step in his game and really have a big year for us, possibly hitting 3's now.
Keeping working, Neemy!

I'm super excited to see Neemy get lots of run. But, man, that release from 3 takes about 2/3 of the shot clock, lol.

Red could have smoked a whole cigar before Neemy got that shot off.
But... keep workin' it, big man. Keep workin' it.

It's a slow release, yes. But that's common for bigs. Partly because of the way their bodies are, partly because bigs usually develop their shooting later on in their careers or at a later age than guards/wings.
Partly because the way the game is played, bigs typically have more time/space to get their shot off from deep - especially if it's a big who's not a known shooter. Like with Neemy, teams don't see him as a shooter, so they'll give him plenty of time/space to get that shot off.
If he shows he can make them, they'll slowly adjust and close out harder on him. But then that still helps us because the middle of the floor becomes more open for driving lanes, cuts, etc.

Just having fun. Sure, it's great if he can hit some. My new dream is that one of the days you start typing a reply like this then stop and say, 'no wait, other people understand things too. They're just joking and I can and1 it and move on."

I don’t care about a slow release if he can make the open one from time to time to keep the defense honest. I don’t need him to be Sam Hauser.

I’d rather he improves other areas of his game. Celtics have plenty of other guys to shoot 3’s. Is a Queta 3 really something we want Celtic offense to generate?

I think it’s more of a keep the defense honest type of thing. I’d like him to have the ability to make an open 3. I don’t want him taking 5 a game…unless he makes 2 or more of course

It's as if he's making trick shots, hitting the iron then somehow getting the ball to go in after it bounces up into the air from that.

Agreed. IIRC the reason Kornet stopped entirely shooting 3s was he wanted to focus on doing all the big man stuff. All I want to see is Queta gobble up all the rebounds and dunk everything!

I just want Neems to get at least 20mpg each night.
He can be a double double machine every game if that happens IMO.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Neemias Queta!!!
I don't think Neemi really needs to shoot 3's to be effective. Luke Kornet was our best center these playoffs (from on/offs anyway) and he didn't shoot 3's at all.
It's nice to have the option of 5-out schemes and 3pt shooting from the center, but the outside shooting also becomes such a crutch sometimes. Queta's value to me is his physicality and that he shoots it from the 3-10 ft range where Horford and Kornet didn't much operate from. Frequently over the last several seasons, in high stress moments our offense would become very easy to guard and our actions very far from the hoop in low % areas.
My favorite thing about Queta is how much he stresses the defense in that area of the paint. I don't really want him standing behind the 3pt line that much

Couldn't agree more. I kinda felt uneasy watching that clip. If he does that for FIBA Worlds or whatever, that's fine. But I want him throwing his size around in the paint next year. You wanna take 1 every other game or so, that's fine but that's not what's gonna make him great here.

Luke stopped shooting 3's because injuries earlier in his career caused him to become a much worse shooter than he had previously been:
https://www.celticsblog.com/2024/3/7/24089736/what-happened-to-luke-kornets-3-point-shot-boston-celtics?
Queta can already rebound and dunk. If he can add a 3 ball, you'd have to be silly imo to think that wouldn't make him a better player. Look what it did for Horford's career. And Brook Lopez. Valanciunas, Okongwu, Jusuf Nurkic, Marc Gasol, Domantas Sabonis all expanded their games later in their careers to add a 3 ball.
What if Isiah Stewart didn't add a 3 ball earlier in his career? What if Myles Turner and KAT couldn't shoot 3's?
What if Mitchell Robinson, Jakob Poeltl and Rudy Gobert could?
Zach Edey added a 3 ball to his game last season. Why? Because he knows that he can't just be a back to the basket big who can only dunk..
Let's also consider that Queta has had some knee injuries. In some of the workout vids I've seen this summer, he's had his knees taped/bandaged up. He probably won't be able to rely on his athleticism as much, as he ages and as those knees become more of an issue. Adding a 3 ball would definitely help him to stay in the league.

You'd probably get that uneasy feeling watch anyone do something they haven't had much practice at. Most people fall the first time they ride a bike.
But you've gotta start somewhere. And at least he made 5/10 from 3 in the clip.
He's 26 yrs old. Lots of bigs didn't start shooting 3's till later in their careers such as Horford (was 29), Nurkic, Valanciunas, Marc Gasol, Brook Lopez, Ibaka, Cousins, Domantas Sabonis, Vucevic, etc.

There's value in expanding your skillset. But I won't knock just drilling down and refining what you already do best either.

With Kornet's shooting,, it actually started with a broken nose (from Embiid) that he had a tough time recovering from early in his career. At one point with the Knicks ,he was like Hauser shooting 2/3 of his shots from 3. His shooting slipped so badly he decided to change his game and it really worked out for him.
