I’m a high school teacher too!
On the salary note, as I am Australian can I ask a question of the teachers here who reside in the US. I heard a long time ago that (at least in some jurisdictions) teachers in the US do not get paid during your summer break, is this the case?

Do teachers (other than canman) have the least bit of awareness that most people don't get 3 months off and cushy full pensions, so aren't sympathetic to when teachers actually have to show up to work?
The world found out during the [2020 in case we’re not supposed to mention it], whatever perks they think teachers get, it’s not nearly enough! Maybe you missed the finding out phase?
So true. I always had a great deal of respect for teachers and felt they were way under compensated but after “home schooling “ a single 1st grader for a year I even have more respect. Teacher rock!!! Thank you to all!!

Most teachers in public schools at least, have the option to spread their salary out over 12 months or over 10. If they choose the 10 month plan they don't get paid over the summer but most people choose the 12 month plan because it allows you to get paid over the summer while you're not working, and then if you want, you can get a summer job for additional income.

Yes, for our district is like this. For the first time, we were allowed to do the 12 months. Up until a couple of years ago, the only options were get more over the school year per check and nothing over the summer, or your final check in June could be what they called 5 in 1, so basically a lump sum to get you through the summer, which I always did until last year. Figured I would try the 12 month option to reduce the end of the summer finish line stretch as you look really rich in June, then, if not careful, really poor at the end of August. Best and worst of both ends of the spectrum haha.

I don’t have kids, don’t even like them, they’re overrated. I know, I know, boo hiss.

I don’t want to deal with one of my own, now imagine a class of 30 who you have no relation to. Sweet baby Jesus, I’d lose my mind! Then add on all the behavioral challenges (lot of undiagnosed and untreated adhd)! Add on our government not caring about SAFETY! Add on never really being off because teaching the students is barely half the job, things you have to do in your “free time.” Many have a second job. Summers off? How many teachers make enough money that they don’t have to have a summer job? Must not have a family. They need an actual summer break, needs to have time to recover to do it all it again MENTALLY! I can interact with family’s kids for a couple hours and need years long breaks!
I’m not saying traumatize kids like some of us were, but I remember being terrified to “disrespect” a teacher. If the teacher had to call home, it wouldn’t be pretty. Respect is lost. I don’t believe in blanket respect because people are adults, but a teacher deserves basic respect! At least respect that everyone is there for a lesson, not for your antics. That’s lost.
Teachers have to teach, be parents, counselors, etc. They don’t have it easy!! All of them aren’t good people, some don’t want the best for kids, plenty of bias, but the majority are there to help. I also have issues with tenure. Still think of my worse teachers who made a big impact on my life. I imagine the good ones impact many in the positive, for life too. It ain’t the money and “breaks,” that’s for sure!
If you don’t care about teachers, you don’t care about the future of the country! Teachers essentially raise the world. You can ask any of the best of us about their teachers and I bet they can name at least one teacher who impacted who they became. They are important and it’s past time we actually realized and cared how much!
(Putting it into the ether, to my evil teachers, it’s still up and stuck! You bums!!)

Appreciate the support of teachers and what we do but my favorite part of this post was that "kids are overrated".

Haha, I was one of the lucky ones as I was home to be with our son, and he actually flourished during remote learning. But my wife was home a couple days a week and she's a great planner, organizer, and keeps us both in line haha. But, she did gain a greater appreciation for teachers during that time and was thankful to get her "alone" time back when we returned, haha.

Used to live there. Went to UNH Manchester for my BA. Glad they changed that rule and allowed you to do 12 months. Not sure I could've done that up there.

Nice, my school is on the seacoast right near UNH. Yeah, as a young chap, it was a challenge, but having a wife, son and such, it became easier. I used to bartend during the summer, but when we had our son, I stopped. I know you teach history I think, but are you in MA?

Teachers and people in that line of work are truly the best of us. Aside from Mrs. Carney who taught 6th grade at South Intermediate in Weymouth, she's the worst of us. Or was the worst of us. Hopefully.

Oh some of the things I went through in the 70s/80s are actually pure comedic gold and have no idea how I became a teacher. My first "naughty" note home got sent when I was in first grade. Got into a first grade "fight". I was so scared, I signed the note by myself with crayon while mispelling my Mom's name wrong and using Mr. instead of my Dad's name. Needless to say, our principal knew and in the category of can't make this up, she screamed at me so loud and her name was Mrs. Loud.
Then in 4th grade, I had Mr. Pitcher who had us do morning exercises every day. All at our desk, the camel, around the World, and the lion. Yes, see if you can figure out what those are.
After being traumatized by that 5th grade was great, and 6th grade guess who I get, yes, Mr. Pitcher got moved up and another year of exercises. And to add to it, this was an all open concept teaching school.
7th grade, I had a detention for saying Um to many times in an oral presentation, which resulted in my writing um on small graph paper both sides. Yes that helped me.
To be continued...as this s*** cannot be made up and I now need to go to my safe place

This is the type of time I’m on!!! May they rest in p! Just because I don’t like some of them, doesn’t mean I can’t separate those feelings tho.
I’m not naming names, but I’m still close enough to wanting “dolls” to enact some justice! This is YEARS later!

Not that I was looking/asking for it, but....talk about an awkward situation but here it goes. The year I graduated from HS I was working at Water Country and the beginning of the season, I was speaking to this lovely young women who was a year or 2 younger than me. I just happened to tell her the story of me having to write "Um" on graph paper, and she was like most, like WTF? So she asked me where I went to school and she said "Oh, my mom was a teacher there." I said, wow, what was her name and it was the same person

Yikes. May I never knowingly run into their kids, because where is yo mammy?!

You know what I’m keeping that insensitive joke about your teacher to myself, but baby, I love dark humor so it’s hard.

Oh trust me, my humor is as dark as you can get...but being a teacher I am careful about what I put in print versus thought or in person. So, you can use your imagination.
