That said, I do wonder why the rush and why not bring him back as an assistant coach so he doesn't count towards the cap. I know a player makes more than an assistant coach but I don't think people were lining up to sign him as a player.

My hope is this means the FO knows they're not done with moves and more trades will be done to balance out the roster (ex. backup center, Mamu may more of a 4), and to move under the tax. Hopefully it's not just the latter by burning a SRP.

A veteran on the players side in the players locker room isn't the same as an assistant coach. A veteran is in the players only meeting, a vet is there day to day with the fellas, that cost something & is valuable to an organization and not so much to the naked eye fan who values the spreadsheets for some odd reason.

-We are not limited in any direction in terms of financials or flexibility.
-Toronto has never operated as a cap space team & never will. Fans tend to forget or disregard those points

This isn't so much that we should free up cap space to sign people in FA, but rather why make a move so soon that puts us into the tax which we all feel pretty confident they will try to find a way to get out of later.

you had to fill out the roster, any player will put you into tax. lets say they had signed martin to 14th contract, they would be into tax, and no way out besides trading one of the 14, and everyone has some value.

by signing temple and waiting to convert Martin to standard contract, you can trade temple at deadline and upgrade martin to standard contract and stay under tax.

I value this boards overall opinion on RJ Barrett about as much as I valued my time last month on jury duty - not one bit!

It’s weird af how we’re so sour on a high character high talent hometown kid who loves everything about being a Raptor. It sickens me.

He's like Derozan. It's not that we don't like RJ, it's just he doesn't fit on a championship version of a team unless on the bench for the MLE. In today's economic climate, you can't someone like RJ when you have players on rookie contracts that can fill the PT.

Look at OKC, even they have Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins that they really need to salary dump if they want to keep re-tooling.

There was a path to being under the tax right now - Martin as 14th man instead of a 2-way, and no Temple, for example, would have done it.

But if they had basically any success, which they are clearly planning on, then some of their players were going to hit their bonuses, and basically any of those hitting would have put them over the tax.

Probably diving in now because they are planning on having that success and having to shed 3M vs 4M at the deadline is not a big difference to them. (And if the success is surprising enough maybe they don't bother to shed at all).

Kings probably offered Monk, Saric and McDermott.

Phoenix probably offered Royce O'Neal and Grayson Allen

so... this doesn't bode well for RJ's trade value, right?

To be fair he was in that trade to make the salaries work. It was the 10th pick that Phoenix wanted. They certainly didn’t care for Jalen Green.

This is what happens when you hold onto an asset for too long. Bulls are a really dumb management team

RJ is probably going to big dog his way into being a 2nd option and he's not bad there. He was hyper efficient when he first got here I could see him doing that again next to Ingram. He's got 2 years on his deal I'd look again at the deadline. We should be dealing Ochai now.

And yet we got more for Pascal and OG by waiting as opposed to trading them a year earlier.

I doubt Vuc has been an asset the past couple of years. Inefficient center with no defense. Not much demand for guys like that.

Wonder if the Kings can free up cap space easily enough to steal the Kum Bucket...

We can help out if needed. Some combination of Monk, Murray, Demar, Saric or whatever other smaller pieces to the Raptors, RJ, Mogbo and Lawson/Castleton etc to GSW, and Kuminga to the Kings.

We shouldn't go anywhere near Demar. Not only does he worsen our roster imbalance, shooting and defense, he'll also expect 1st/2nd option usage. RJ at least tries to play off-ball.

I'm not against a DeMar reunion but given Ed "Dad never loved me" Rogers f*ckery, making said move would be a very "please do not be upset by the Masai firing I 100 percent made the call on despite him having a year left under his contract" move to distract from the fact we've heard basically nothing about the search for Ujiri's replacement.

Knowing the Kangz, they might be dumb enough to to give up Kegan Murray in that trade.

Return to Toronto Raptors
