[Rumor or report] Doncic set to re-sign with Lakers for 4 year deal on Aug 2-3

Read on Twitter

https://sportklub.n1info.si/kosarka/preoblikovani-luka-doncic-se-vraca-v-zda/

Sportklub is the origin of the reporting but it's unclear if they are a legit source.

Mavs fans, has this source been reliable in the past?

No idea if it's reliable, but every indication we've gotten up to this point is that he's fully committed to the Lakers. It should be a question of "when" not "if".

Well some had doubts. I think it's interesting that he signs almost immediately.

I'm sure it's a 4 year deal with PO

If true it should allow the Lakers to think long-term (or at least middle-term). Panic deals that move everything that isn't nailed down for a 1 year win-now push aren't necessary.

The Lakers have limited tradable assets - they need patience to wait for good value deals that are good fits for the team. Luka signed long-term should give them that patience.

I think it'll be 4 total, existing year + 2+1.

Anyone thinking Luka would not resign was either delusional or just Laker hating. Gone are the days of superstar free agents getting to free agency. They take their max extensions and then if they want to change teams they can ask for a trade later.

Always made sense for Luka to sign extension even if he leaving. Best path to recouping super max

This is what I have thought would be the smart thing for him to do. He's got 7 years in - next year he gets to 8. The new deal will cancel the 26/27 player option. So 2 years + a player option on the 3rd gets him to 10 years. Then he can opt out of that and sign a 5 year supermax extension starting in 28/29. I did the math and he'd lose about $17.3M over the 7 years (26/27 season to 32/33 season) if he chose a 4 year deal with a PO versus a 3 year deal with a PO.

However - You could argue that he'd be less likely to get another max extension after the next one so maybe it makes sense to take the 3+1 and then a 5 year max. It would basically be trading in $17.3M over the 7 seasons (26/27 to 32/33) for the guarantee of an additional $74.3M. A 2+1 then 5yr max = $491.2M. A 3+1 then 5 year max = $565.5M

The report says 4 year extension for $229m.

So we all expected 3 year extension but he's added a year

The report is based on old info. 4 years $229m assumes a 10% cap jump next year. League already said it is projecting only a 7% increase. So not sure I fully trust that report

There’s a random website that just increased its ad revenue 1000% today.

The concept makes sense, but I’ll eat crow if it goes down as this site is suggesting and he signs a 4 year deal on August 2 or 3.

Yup, this should pretty much quell any and all panic trades that Laker haters were hoping to force onto the Lakers. Doesnt really matter what Lebron thinks anymore, he's going nowhere this year and he's free to come back cheap to coattail ride to some rings, or just go back to CLE and leave Luka to do his own thang. It's clear that the Lakers are going all in on their 2026 FA plan, if no major FA is available to sign, theyre free to play the absorb contracts for assets game that under cap teams love to play. Likely theyll try to retain Reaves/Ayton for as cheap as possible and to use them as salary filler for the next superstar that demands out. Under new ownership, the team just need to be patient and let things cook, the team is in dire need of a pipeline of cheap young talent lured over by an elite developmental program, similar to what MIA has done.

For americans that only consider the money, yeah. But luka want to win. Signing and then asking for a trade sucks everything that could make the new team competive out of it. And its not like lakers can offer more then any other team next summer. The "superstars resign with their team cause it gives them most money" isnt even a thing since mavs traded him and he not being able to get the supermax anymore.

My opinion is that he should just chill til next summer and let lakers prove themselves. Every decent player on that team is expiring this season. If he signs now he might end up on lakers team that make the hornets look amazing next season

Good for LA whether it’s 2 or 4 years.

LAL should still be aggressively trying to improve the team this season though…

He won't extend because he is planning to leave LA and join the Washington Wizards next summer.

Well, at least that's the rumor I heard (from me).

The source for that is an unnamed article. Thats what the slovenia dude said. Like the dude knows lukas father, but he said he read an article that said luka would resign before eurobasket for four years. And Lakers Nation took that and ran with it. Imagine if everything I read on the internet were true. I'll just wait and see what happens

Very smart move. Young roster with no offensive star, great location with international appeal, city that hasn't had an iconic player since the 1970s so he can be the clear greatest player in their history with a title or two.
