Seems like, for this yr especially, giving JD some reserve guard run in the beginning of the year would have been all upside. Even if JD stinks and it costs you a couple of games, who cares -- this is a gap year -- you just release him then.
It seems like with the moves this offseason and some of the quotes/interviews with the players/coaches/execs, they do want to play faster and do more cutting, more running this season.
Bottom line, JD was here for 3 years and contributed basically nothing to the big club. He only had like 1 game where he got in during non garbage time and he did nothing in that game. And even in garbage time, he wasn't that good.
sure, but it a guy contributes nothing to the big club (while being the literal MVP of the minor league) isn't it on the coach or organization to give him some chance if he's literally dominating the lesser league?
JD played 40, 70 and 90 minutes in each of the three seasons. In the title yr, he played literally *0* minutes with Tatum on court over the entire season. It seems more likely that they have a narrow archetype for guards: defend, shoot 3's and don't turn it over, and a deficiency of creativity to even scheme for a player with different strengths
But also ... it's a moot point because JDD is probably just not that good, you're right. So I'm not going to get all flustered that they let him go which was always the most likely outcome anyway... it would have been fun if he couldve played this upcoming Oct/Nov and nothing would have been lost in the worst scenario but c'est la vie. (Hope they dont use his roster spot on freakin Ben Simmons, tho ... lol)
This is where I come down. I mean, who gives a **** if we're under the 2nd apron on July goddamn 24th? when we were only $300K over it before? Big whoop. No one cares. Zero benefit UNLESS something else is coming OR...unless JD asked to be let go (which would surprise me but is possible).
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

The only reason i would even be mildly interested in Simmons would be his role as tank commander.

I vote for Big Al. Probably need to move Niang or Simons for salary but he’s the piece I would love to see us add.

I just like the JD news for Walsh. Seems pretty likely he stays after this, pending other major moves.

We can also stop trying twist and turn to shuttle Tillman in our trade simulations.

Ooooohhh.... that's asking a lot of me. I'm not sure I'm ready to give that up. If I can save $4.32 trading him for a guy on a 2nd round exception deal, I gotta try!

If they wanted to divide the center spot by 3 every game, I can see it. But I'm not short-circuiting Minott and Walsh getting a fair audition this year.

Oh sure, but I was "but you gotta take Tillman into your TPE for a top 55 protected pick first" on any Simons trade I put together.

Benefit to getting under the 2nd apron now:
a) We now have more flexibility for making other moves. There's certain things teams simply can't do from a roster building perspective if they're over the 2nd apron. We're under it now so we can now do things to build the roster that we couldn't before.
b) Sure, we could always make a move later to get under the 2nd apron. But why wait? You make the move now, get it done and over with. So now you can breathe a sigh of relief. You can relax, and have peace of mind knowing, we did it!
Again, as I mentioned earlier, if they knew JD was gonna be the one to get cut..mine as well do it now, as early as possible so he has more time to latch on with another team - before all the good opportunities with other teams are taken. Teams in the NBA and overseas are filling the rosters fast rigth now. Shake Milton and Lonnie Walker literally just got signed by overseas clubs.
Perhaps JD has an offer from another team and asked for the release. Who knows..

True, true. That burden has been lifted.

Yup. This is good news for Walsh.
Things are falling into place for him:
-JD waived
-Walsh had a good summer league performance
-He got ejected from a SL game but Joe loved it lol

One of them is eligible for a 2-way contract with us and is 6'10" and can shoot 3's.
The other is 6'3", is a suspect shooter and is not eligible for a 2-way with us.
It is what it is.
It's probably for the best. JD will probably go play overseas somewhere and get 30 MPG, rather than riding the bench for us..

I hope I'm wrong but I'm kinda out on Walsh. Summer League aside, I don't see enough there yet. If I was running things, I put him and Minott head to head and if he doesn't beat him out, I waive him too before the start of the season and sign someone else.

I could get into it if he still plays defense and is up for a lot of driving and kicking
I like defense and our only PF is Georges Niang

No I understand the difference between their contracts. Mind you nobody's losing sleep over the cutting of JD Davison here. Just saying that Norris is cheeks and for whatever Davison's shooting weaknesses are, he's a better player than Norris.

My general feeling on guys who play on the perimeter on offense is that they need to be able shoot threes or dribble at a pretty high level.
If you can’t do one of those, it’s difficult to commit playing time.
Walsh’s shot looked a little better but we’ll really need to wait till training camp/preseason to see for sure.
