No it’s just subtle xenophobia from a lot of ex and even current NBA players towards non North American players. A lot of ex/current players North American players have this mentality that basketball is “their” game and the “media” loves to hype up European players in order to dismiss or devalue their own impact and how good they are or actually are.
Before they didn’t like Giannis and would openly take shots at him and say he wasn’t as good as other Americans(Harden) but then he won and then they moved on to Jokic but he also won too. They didn’t think Luka was all that but oddly enough since he’s on the Lakers that’s subsided tremendously. They’ve never got on Embiid as much as the other three but maybe they feel some kinship with him since they feel the media is always criticizing him. They haven’t focused on Wemby yet but it’s probably coming once he reaches that top 5 player in the league status.
So that leads to Gobert, who’s primarily a defensive player, European with a huge contract and accolades but has never won anything. Whether or not they think Gobert is overpaid and his impact is overvalued would be one thing but yet these same players never call out or have never called out American players whose careers were or are similar to Gobert’s(or even less so) but also have no rings.
The loud talking heads and these ex-players also do this stuff publicly because they know that basically all of the European players just ignore them and won’t say anything back. Whereas if they were to try and disrespect their other compatriots, it probably gets ugly and turns into a whole back and forth publicly and on social media.
