That said, I hope he turns it around -- not wishing failure on some kid I don't know!

Yeah, I don't think there's much optimism around Branham. But if they cut him now and sign somebody else, they're out the cost of that other player. And if they just cut Branham but go with a 14-man roster, it means they can't use Branham's salary in a trade.

So even if they really don't like Branham at all, it makes some sense to keep him for now. We may need to move him at some future point as trade ballast or to generate a roster spot, but there's no urgency to do it right away.

Oh for sure!
An opportunity may arise, who knows, or Watkins may play at a level where they want him full time, but in principle, barring another trade of a vet, we are set for the season, and the young man has a job. And a chance to surprise us.

I don’t think Gilbert is happy with the Lakers offseason

Wow!

I figured he'd get $5-6M back for Smart, so that's a nice negotiation. I'm shocked Wesley gave back anything. There's no guarantee he signs anywhere. I guess maybe he figures he can make that money in Europe if necessary. He just wants to play rather than ride the pine.

Who remembers when Mike Bibby played one game for us, walked the ball up court shaking his head while staring at the floor, then gave back the entirety of his contract for his buyout

What, the Go-Go's didn't need a PG? Realistically, the kid has enough confidence in himself to bet $1.4 million. I wish him good fortune.

:o

That's almost unheard of, giving back the bag late in one's career. In the words of Dr. Phil, "How'd that work out for (him)"?

https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bibbymi01.html

February 23, 2011: Traded by the Atlanta Hawks with Jordan Crawford, Maurice Evans and a 2011 1st round draft pick (Chris Singleton was later selected) to the Washington Wizards for Hilton Armstrong and Kirk Hinrich.

February 28, 2011: Waived by the Washington Wizards.

March 2, 2011: Signed as a free agent with the Miami Heat.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/basketball/nba/heat-bibby-0/

Bibby is expected to be with the Heat when they host Orlando on Thursday. Heat president Pat Riley says the signing moves Miami “into the direction of our championship dreams.”

His signing is not a surprise. When Bibby was traded by Atlanta to Washington last week, there was immediate speculation that Bibby would seek a buyout from the Wizards.

And Miami quickly vaulted to the top of Bibby’s wish list, especially after he agreed to give up $6 million that was guaranteed to him next season to get out of his deal with Washington and have the ability to join a championship contender.

Looking at b-r, it looks like Bibby had a solid 22 games with the Heat, started 12, going into the playoffs. However, Mike Bibby totally bombed in the 20 playoff games the Heat played. He gave up $6 Million guaranteed with the Wizards for NOTHING more from Miami the next season. The Knicks picked him up that December on what looks like a veteran minimum and he fizzled out the league from there at 33 years old.

He went for it rather than slog around on a Flip Saunders team that only won 23 wins.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

We made a couple of awesome trades involving Kirk Hinrich.

Chicago gave us the #17 pick in the draft to take him off their hands. He played on our roster for 48 games and played so well that we moved him at the Trade Deadline for the #18 pick in the next draft. We rented him for 48 games and somehow got two FRP's out of it! It was known as the Heinrich Maneuver.

Sadly, that first pick turned out to be Kevin Seraphin (instead of Eric Bledsoe or Avery Bradley), and the second pick turned out to be Chris Singleton (instead of Tobias Harris, Kenneth Faried or Jimmy Butler).

That infamous 2011 draft ... I wanted Kawhi Leonard and Kenneth Faried.

The Wizards scouting personnel really stuck the landing with Jan Vesely and Chris Singleton. :banghead:

That was filthy, disgusting work.

I think there's a fair argument to be made that Goodwin is better than Smart at this point.

However, the one thing Smart has over Goodwin is size. Goodwin is a real good defender of PG's and SG's, but he doesn't really have the size to switch onto bigger forwards. Smart is strong enough to hold up in a switch against a 3 or 4, and sometimes even against a center.
