Re: Welcome to Boston, JD Davison! – Appreciation Thread (Waived July 24, 2025)
Oh wow. That sucks. Was hoping JD would get a chance this season if we traded Simmons. Hoping he can catch on with another team. He might become a good NBA player if given the chance.
I had a feeling this would happen a few weeks ago. We needed to open up a roster spot. The mostly likely guys were JD and Walsh that would get waived.
This opens open a roster spot to get Bassey or Ben Simmons now. There is also that chance that Brad wants to open that spot up for a future trade or free agent signing.
Best of luck to JD. Keep working, bro!

What's the chances we see him down the road, playing big minutes for some playoff opponent we're facing a few years from now?

Good luck to JD.
A sign that they not only couldn't find a taker for his contract, but that they also expect not to find a taker for Simons's contract as well? Max and Hayden are more clearly in the pipeline now, with less ball pounding likely in the C's future.

Rooting for him. Was kind of hoping he'd get a shot with us taking a injury forced down-year and moving Jrue. He's a fun player to watch.
I feel like JD is going to need to have a Linsanity type moment if he's going to make it in the league. I just don't think coaches are going to ever give him the keys to drive a nice enough car to hit his ceiling, which is what he needs to do to stick around as an undersized scoring guard who doesn't shoot the ball at an above average percentage. That is unless he can have a 10-15 game stretch where he looks like 2nd coming of Isaiah Thomas, especially on a poor-mediocre team that would be willing to ride that kind of hot hand just to see what happens. If he can show he can catch lightning in a bottle at the NBA level, even for short stretches, I think someone gives him a longer leash and a real shot.
Hoping he can go somewhere he can get minutes and have a long-enough stretch to validate he can play in the NBA and isn't just the G League MVP but the epitome of a AAAA player.
Spurs have more guards than a bank vault right now but he'd be great with Wemby as a rim runner. Hope he can find a home.

Damn, Wikipedia hasn't even updated JD's page.

Very low.
What reason do we have to believe that might happen?
3 years since being drafted and did literally nothing at the NBA level. Odds are pretty low of him making it in the league. He's probably better off going to play overseas.

The timing is more likely a favor to him. I don't think the Celtics were under immediate time pressure to make the move. Also, they might be simplifying their player development for other guys by erasing Davison from the picture.
Maaayyybe it's a gesture to look more appealing to some other end-of-bencher they want to sign, or otherwise to publicly communicate a negotiating position, but more likely it's for one or both of the reasons I suggested above.

Good luck JD
Shame we developed him for 3 years and then nothing
Some here knew he didn't have any chance in the NBA from the start

Annoying that he probably can play, and might fet picked up and we paid for the development. Just not efficient.

It was always gonna be tough for him cracking the main team. His entire time here, he was playing behind at least 3 legit PGs. Was hoping this would be that season but oh well. He's still really young. Maybe he takes off somewhere else.

you develop all 2nd rounders/UDFAs and hope that maybe 10% of them pan out like hauser and maybe walsh. it's not efficient but it's better than 0% if you didn't develop them.
GL to him but if it's between him and walsh, the answer is clear.

This clearly sailed over your head. My point is we cut a lot of guys in the last several years who end up pitted against us later. Strus, Yabs, Wagner, Nesmith. We've seen it play out many times before.

Rich man’s problems though which I’d rather have then have the team’s dreck go straight overseas.

Davison just signed a two way contract with the Rockets.

I'm aware. Nothing sailed over my head.
But I see no correlation between those guys and JD, other than he's a former Celtic.
I mean, we could say the same thing about Nik Stauskus, Juwon Morgan, Jabari Parker, Juancho Hernangomez, Semi Ojeleye, Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters, Tacko Fall, Dennis Schroder, Malcolm Brogdon, Jaden Springer, Lamar Stevens, Noah Vonleh, Dalano Banton, Svi Mykhailiuk, Drew Peterson, etc.
