How did he fumble so badly with money management? Dude made over 100 million for his career, didn't he invest most of that to acquire cash flow? Get sponsorships (even if its minor), get into tech, stocks?

I don't feel remotely sad for him, but just pity.

I don’t think that would help. These guys would just borrow against their future earnings.

Time to start a podcast and just say stupid things, join the BIG3 if he isn't already in there, try to get ESPN to hire him in a Kendrick Perkins role, whatever.

“I have explored numerous business deals, partnerships and investment opportunities, but I have not been able to secure consistent or significant income.”

Due to my inability to secure steady income, I have been forced to rely on withdrawals from my retirement savings to meet my everyday living expenses and financial obligations.”

They have a pension. They don't get to tap it until they are 62 years old.

Yea, but NBA retirement is like 38 years old.

So? You don't retire from the NBA out of prime working age, why would the pension be meant for guys in their 40's?

I checked and it says they can even access it as early as 45 years old, quite generous.

The NBA pension can begin as early as your 45th birthday, but typically begins after you turn 62.

So how much will you receive in your NBA pension?

Like most pension programs, it depends on:

Years of Service

Average Salary

Age

The NBA is gracious in the annual amount offered. If you earn at least three "Years of Service," you are guaranteed a minimum pension $56,988 annually if taken at age 62.

This number increases as your "Years of Service" increase.

For example, if you play 10 or more seasons, your annual pension jumps to $215,000 annually.

This seems like it's more or less entirely on Ariza though, doesn't it? Per the article:

Trevor listed his monthly expenses as $37,008. He said he spends $18,850 on his mortgage, $458 a month on maintenance, $2,000 on health care expenses, $2,000 on groceries, $1,000 on utilities, $600 on his phone, $500 on his laundry, $500 on clothes, $2,000 on education, $4,300 on auto expenses and $3,300 on a car loan.

For someone who allegedly hasn't made any money for 3 years these expenses are insane. Like why are you still loaning a car if you're broke?

Why should she get any child support if he has full time custody of their son. She gets 10k in support AND he has him full time. What the **** is this bull. Forget his financial trouble why the **** is she getting a **** a dime of child support. That’s what is wrong with the system a lot of it is biased against the fathers

In his declaration, Trevor said their son, Tristan, “has been residing primarily in” his care since December 2023.

He said, “While the judgment provides for equal parenting time, in reality, Bree has not exercised her scheduled custodial time with our son.”

He added, “She does not pick him up on her designated days, nor does she make an effort to have any meaningful relationship with him. Instead, I have assumed full responsibility for his care, which includes providing a stable home, meals, clothing, transportation and other necessities.”

It actually exists. I recently looked it up and it makes it even more insane how players can go this broke. It´s at least part of the last CBA, so I don´t know how much they earned before, but the current benefits are extremely high. But to be fair, Ariza made close to 119 Million in player salaries, retired in 2022 and still earned 12.8 Million in his 2nd last season. If he is broke 3 years later there is no pension in the world that would fix his issues.

If you are interested, here is an overview of all the benefits retired players can receive, all that is required to be eligible is to be at least 1 day on a regular season roster for 3 seasons. It goes per years of service and you can start to receive it from the moment you are 45. It doesn´t state exact numbers, but provided examples are:

The NBA is gracious in the annual amount offered. If you earn at least three "Years of Service," you are guaranteed a minimum pension $56,988 annually if taken at age 62.

This number increases as your "Years of Service" increase.

I wonder more about how on earth you spend 600 Dollars each Month on your phone and 500 Dollars on Laundry. Is he buying a new phone and washing machine each month?

Dry cleaning is my guess for the laundry. And on further thought, it makes me wonder if he's still paying for other people. That would explain the phone, clothes, etc. Beyond paying for his son of course.

No wonder he's broke, he's dropping this type of coin while broke, can you imagine what his expenses were when he was getting paid.

He may not actually be broke and maybe using creative ways to hide assets. If his kid has been living with him for over 2 years and the mother doesn't want a relationship and still has been demanding CS...it honestly wouldn't surprise me if something tricky was going on here.

He earned $116 million over his basketball career so the fact he's broke is on him but it seems like he should be able to easily fix the situation unless there's something preventing him from tv/coaching. I just have a hard time beleving a guy who had an 18 year career in which he played for 10 teams can't get a job that pays at least 500k/year which would make his problems go away. He shouldn't be lacking in opportunities.

Father's have the $$$...and CS these days is nothing more than dressed up spousal support. 10K isnt required to support one child....I recall reading Jimmy Butler's ex is getting 55K a month albeit for multiple kids (at least 3 I think). Still absurd.

The craziest part is, let´s assume this is what he spent each month since he´s retired. That accumulates to roughly 1.3 Million over 3 years. His last season in the league he earned 2.64 Million. So if you deduct taxes, agent fees and so on, you probably wind up with that amount, which would mean that he was pretty much broke already while still playing in the league and being on a 3 year, 40 Million contract that he signed as a 33 year old, so obviously his last big payday. I can understand if players waste their money at the start of their career, but that was his 15th season in the league already and he had pretty decent contracts before based on when they were signed.

Either that or he was spending even more money at the start of his retirement.

Sorry but you can easily downsize into a very nice home for $2K-$4K per month. Get it together my guy.

Why pay any mortgage when he surely had enough to buy a house outright.

Well yes, it is on him...but.

These guys get spoon fed basketball, and basketball only from age 10. Basically everything gets paid for, and there is very little real world opportunity to learn the lessons of money.

There might have been a personal finance presentation at some point in there, but I doubt a good number of these folks are prepared to handle personal finance.

The resources and the organization is there to hedge against these types of situation. I am not talking about the guy should be getting millions of dollars or something, but there should definitely be some sort of social security type mechanism to prevent these guys from going homeless.

I think I read somewhere that AI was almost homeless as well, but somewhere along the line someone was kind enough to set up a trust fund for him.

And you know what? That's their own fault.

I can understand being in your 20s and letting what feels like unlimited wealth go to your head. But by your 30s, you should at least be mature enough to understand that basketball isn't going to be around forever, and at that point you should already have been planning for the future.

Depends on your social circle, family friends , if no one around never knew how to deal with wealth, and you are not a self aware type of person, it can happen.

This is my theory. He could just do what every ex-player with some recognition seems to be doing and start a podcast. And he's an ex-Laker who played with Kobe and he also played with Harden so he probably gain some traction by telling some of those stories. He could also just wait a couple of years because apparently his son is an elite prospect(ranked as high as #6 in class of '26 by some rankings). With his last name he could probably get some NIL money too.

Because they have another daughter named Taylor that she doesn't allow him to see. He's also in court to lower the amount so I'm guessing it will be significantly less. There's also the chance that Trevor Ariza is being a little less than truthful where his son and Bree have been staying.

FWIW, I'm a guy and I got custody and child support so I'm not sure the system is all that biased against fathers. I know quite a few guys in my situation actually. We are growing, but a lot of fathers I know aren't active in their children's lives by choice yet act like victims when they have to pay child support.
