I think a salary cap paired with a salary floor of some sort along with some arbitration and control tweaks could go a long ways towards balancing things out.
only a fan, only an opinion

Re: 2025 ATL Thread - Burnes to have TJ surgery
I think a hard cap (which I still think won't happen) will result in free agency being knocked down to 5 or maybe even 4 years). It's tough when there is such a wide gap in local TV money. NBA has a gap too but their national TV money in the new deal is almost 4X what MLB's is. And the NFL is 6X MLB, and of course their TV money is all national. I don't think an NBA style soft cap would work in MLB. If big market teams, and their extra local TV revenue, can exceed the cap they will.
I'm just spittballin' I don't really know how it will all work out. But it would but it sure would be fun to be able to get excited about free agency for a change.
ETA, having a cap and having a GM like Arnold who finds good value guys would be incredible. The Cashman's and Gome's wouldn't just be able to buy their way out of bad deals by buying more players, bad deals would have consequences.

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

One thing that would be really hard to iron out is how you smooth a cap over a period of time. Like, you can't just in an instant give the Pirates and the Dodgers the same rules
Do it for Chuck

Bad news potentially for AZ. I don't care from a Brewers perspective, I didn't want him for what it would cost.

Oh ****....that was a bit of a surprise.
Grew up in the 80's/90's watching the Cubs on WGN because...well, that's all there was to watch on some of those boring summer days and I liked baseball.
Never cared about the Cubs but I did enjoy watching Sandberg/Grace/Dawson, etc...
We watched the tragedy unfold. We did as we were told, we bought and sold. It was the greatest show on Earth...but then it was over.

Interesting deal there. One would assume that the Reds have to be pretty happy with Marte at 3B. EDLC is the SS.
Is Hayes just a defensive sub/depth/occasional guy or maybe Marte changes positions? Hayes is an elite defender but is basically in the Joey Ortiz mold at this point. A flash in the pan showing the ability to hit - but Hayes costs $7+ million/year for 5 more years.
EDIT: It appears Marte is going to move around the diamond a bit, specifically as an OF right now.

Ahh let's see how much the Phillies are gonna overpay.
ETA: Mick Abel (#6) and Eduardo Tait (#4).
I'd be losing my **** mind if the Brewers did something that dumb.

The price of pitching seems really high this deadline. I know it's hard to trade away contributors when you're in first place, but the Brewers do have bit of a surplus and could conceivably make their farm system AND their ML team a little better at the same time by trading a pitcher or two for prospects and trading prospects for a good power bat. I know that never really happens - you typically either buy or sell - but I would love to see them continue to be an opportunistic front office.
The Mets are kind of hilarious. Not gonna pretend I know exactly how good those prospects are, but it seems really short-sighted as usual. Rogers is not young.
The NL division races are quite close, as is the race for a critically important top-2 seed, which makes for a lot of motivated buyers. However, I think only the Reds are really still in the hunt to sneak into a wild card spot, but San Diego is pretty talented and has a 3.5 game headstart. That makes 7 potential buyers in the NL. Contrast that with the AL, where the division races aren't particularly close, but there is still a tight race for a top-2 seed. More importantly, 5 teams are within 4 games of the last wild card. So overall, there's about as many buyers as there are sellers, maybe even more, and that's especially true of pitching apparently.

The Brewers could get some really nice pieces if they do end up dealing Quintana or Cortes

I'm okay with Arnold passing on a Suarez deal.
