Grimes is a decent player but:
- Not sure if he can contribute to winning
- He plays a position we don't really need (unlike the 4 position)
- The market for players like him is dry, so not much competition

I don't see him as a part of our future, now VJ is here so the question is: 'Keep him at a reasonable price for more years and use him as a trade chip, or just let him go next summer?'

What are our options?
Letting him go next summer doesn't free up cap space, so it's not very beneficial to let him walk.

I'd prefer to re-sign him to a reasonable deal, see how the guards play with each other, and then trade the odd man out (most likely Grimes).

If nobody is interested in him, would it be wise to sign him? Because that probably means you would have to attach something to do the trade afterwards?
He's a decent player. Teams would definitely be interested in him if the price is right. Considering he'll most likely be the odd guy out of the rotation, it's important for the Sixers to make sure they sign him to a deal that is tradeable.

As to what that number is, you can read Fred Katz's article from yesterday where executives provide insight to what they think he's worth.

It also allows them access to money to use in a trade that they would not have access to in free agency. In that case, the Grimes plus picks could fetch a player they would not have access to without Grimes’ salary.

It's definitely important not to sign him over market, but re-signing him to the right number offers advantages that they wouldn't have otherwise. If he takes the QO, focus on giving the other guards more time next season and move on.

Clearly, the Sixers are going with this strategy otherwise Grimes would have signed already. The only real questions left are what are the Sixers offering and will Grimes take the QO instead?

That article has the median at about 3 years 42 million. I don't believe Grimes will take less AAV than what NAW got (4-62).

Simplest answer would then be 2-32. However... is Josh approving paying the tax for a team in flux whose "star" is likely finito? Don't see it.

Now that Morey flubbed his asset management class and instead drafted Edgecombe, Grimes isn't long for Philly anyway. Might as well S&T him now.

I gotta imagine Grimes wants out of here because he's not going to get the same opportunities he had last year going forward. He's likely fishing for a gigantic contract and would need get more opportunity and on-ball time for that to happen. I think 2 years might need to be the contract since we're definitely not S&T him and we're not going to pay him a ton. Gives him opportunity to play on a possible contender with injury concerns, which means he'll have opportunities over his 2 years to show he's worthy of a big contract.

Can he be traded by the deadline this year? I’d sign him to 2 years with a PO and try to pump his value to start the year. McCain is coming back from injury & we can ease VJ in to a bigger role so now is the time for Grimes to get bigger minutes and more touches.

I do expect Grimes to start at shooting guard and play around 32mpg. VJ and McCain should be our primary backups, each getting around atleast 16mpg.

I’ve been looking at how the Pacers and Thunder structure their guard rotations. Grimes seems set to play a role similar to Nembhard or Dort, a starting SG logging solid minutes. Both those teams also feature dynamic guard duos.. the Pacers have TJ and Mathurin, the Thunder have Caruso and Cason. Our version of that would be VJ and McCain.

Given how young VJ and McCain are, and with Maxey and Grimes unlikely to play all 82 games, that’s where Lowry and Gordon come in, providing stability and reliability.

Where have you been the last 2 years? Lmao Nurse is gonna play 3 guard lineups aggressively whether you like it or not. Grimes is prob gonna get 50% of his minutes at 3.

Yes.

And yeah, I think in an ideal world: we sign him to a reasonable deal, he plays well, but VJ and McCain look too good to not play heavy minutes, we flip him for value/front court help by the deadline.

I've disconnected from basketball for a couple weeks. Shocked he's still unsigned lol.

I’m not. I think he is standing on his number and not budging. He is very confident in himself and comfortable betting on himself. That is going to lead to a price that I do not want the team to pay him or him taking the qualifying offer. If I were his agent, I would strongly urge him to take a three year deal at the current offer. Betting on unrestricted free-agency is extremely risky, and has more plausible downside than upside.

If they can’t agree on the number, I would let him sign the qualifying offer. Signing him long-term for over $16M has a lot of downside since we already have a guard heavy roster. He is a nice player, but I am not sure we are a good long term fit to risk, say $20 million per season, on a long term deal for a guy we may use in a more limited role than he may see elsewhere.

Is there any rush for him to sign the qualifying offer early in the summer? Perhaps something happens to increase his leverage over the next month, so he might as well wait on the QO. He knows that over isn’t going anywhere. Frankly, if the Sixers pulled that offer, he would prob be comfortable going to a situation where he can best showcase his skills for a full season. I imagine he signs by the start of camp so he can hit the ground running, but may wait until he is closer to that date.

If the plan is to pump and dump him, then I'm all for giving Grimes a 3-year deal, but for no more than $15 mil per. I don't get the angst over whether or not he signs here, though. This team isn't winning anything this year, it's all about seeing what we have with the accumulated youth.

Question - if he signs the QO, can he still be traded as an expiring before the deadline?

Yes, but he'd have a no-trade clause and could veto any trade he doesn't like. The receiving team also wouldn't acquire his bird rights.

I'd personally try to swap him for Eason, given that Houston now also has Thompson, Durant, Smith, and DFS. Okogie and Tate are also there to soak up small-ball minutes at the 3.

I understand that Grimes views this as an opportunity to cash in but his only track record of elite production came on a tanking team. He’s just not going to generate a robust market for himself given those circumstances.

I think that’s actually the common theme for the RFAs right now. Giddey is a regular season stat stuffer but was a liability in his one playoff experience, Kuminga barely saw the court in the playoffs because Kerr doesn’t trust him, and Grimes has never produced much in a winning environment. It’s a tough ask to make $20M+ a year with no track record of playoff success.

I'm still holding out hope for a Grimes for Kuminga trade. If we came away with that result, I'd be pretty excited going into the season. I feel like Kuminga is going to really thrive once he moved on from the Warriors. Of course, it probably won't happen, but you have to think that it'd work out for both teams.

I’m very skeptical that Kuminga is interested in playing winning basketball vs. getting his stats, especially after a big payday. Feels like he’d rather do a Jerami Grant to Detroit type of deal.

That can't happen right now. If Sixers accept a S&T player like Kuminga, they would be capped at the first apron which they would be over if they added Kuminga.

From my perspective, Grimes might be entering negotiations thinking the team still has $20M in space before hitting the second apron, and feeling confident we’re eager to re-sign him after letting Yabu walk. But after signing Lowry for nearly $4M, that leaves us with only $15–16M before the apron. Even so, we addressed Yabu’s departure well by adding Watford, Walker, and Broome.

If Grimes reads the situation, he’ll see we can’t offer more than $15–16M (by doing so we’d exceed second apron) and that we’re not overly pressured to keep him, whether he takes the qualifying offer or leaves, because we have VJ, strong guard depth, and power forwards who can cover Yabu’s role. That should also make him wary of a 1 year deal, since our depth could limit his opportunities and we may not see him as a long term piece.

Beyond the Sixers, Morey likely bet correctly that the Pistons wouldn’t pursue him. With Detroit out, the main suitors are the Jazz and Nets, both of whom have plenty of guards and probably won’t meet his asking price under the new CBA. I also don’t see any team out there who can give him the opportunity to prove he is a $20-25M per year player. The closest are the Jazz and the Wizards but both teams have also a good guard depth and has a lot of mouths to feed.

Given all this, the best outcome/optimal strategy for both sides is a $15–16M deal over 2 or 3 years plus a player option. That would give Grimes 3–4 years to prove he’s worth the bigger payday he’s aiming for. And by that time he’d be at his prime years at 28-29 years of age at that time and Embiid and George’s contract would be off our books.

In terms of talent and value, I see Grimes as comparable to Colin Sexton or Anfernee Simons if given high offensive usage. If he plays a smaller role, his value is closer to Grayson Allen or Harrison Barnes. Im basing it mostly on EPM+archetype.

In terms of career trajectory, he reminds me of Mikal Bridges, starting as a 3&D player, then showing flashes as a primary scoring option, but with a noticeable defensive drop in that role.

Ultimately, any team acquiring him will have to decide whether they want the “scorer” version or the “3&D” version. I don’t believe the scorer version will translate into winning a lot of games. And his best role is as a #3-4 option plus defensive contribution when everyone is healthy and sometimes be called to be #2-3 option with neutral defensive contribution, when one or two of the top guys are not playing, which is what he is projects to be on our team.
