Added benefit of beefing up the DL is that it will give our OL experience against strong guys opposite them. Last year, UDFA Evan Anderson was very arguably our most physically daunting DL. This year he may not make the roster.
Mychel (sp?) Williams looking dominant too from reports. DL could be strong instead of weak this year.

Very encouraging reports on the rookie DL, as well as Upton Stout, who may be in legit competition to start at slot corner. Williams apparently didn't do one-on-one pass-rush drills against the starters (from Cohn), but looked good against the backups. And the starting DL held up very well against the outside run yesterday, based on reports. Mykel Williams has been able to stalemate Trent in the run game repeatedly, which is no small feat.

DBs still a bit of a concern, with the safety position pretty up in the air and no clear third (once Green is healthy; second now) outside corner - though Dallis Flowers may be making a move. He was a good starter with the Colts prior to a serious injury. Hopefully the improved DL and super-fast LB corps can compensate. I am really excited to see the Nascar package in action.

Geoff Schwartz, who's a big Chiefs guy, said the 49ers should win the division because of the schedule.

However, they have a top-heavy roster and if they lose a couple of the high-salary players to injury, season could go off the tracks like last season.

It's all about health and the development of young players this year. Even fully healthy, we're relying on several young players to start and play well - Puni, Pearsall, probably another WR and RB at some point, the three rookie DL, Winters, maybe Martin, Green, probably Stout, hoping Brown bounces back, etc. It could set the table for years of a competitive team, or it could backfire badly. With the schedule, we should still be right in the playoff hunt, but we'll probably still need to go .500 or so in the division.

Mykel Williams back at practice. That's a relief. After playing through an ankle injury last season, I was worried this might become a chronic thing. Still could, but at least in the short term he's back out there.

Seems can't get everyone on the field at the same time. On another note, I just read that ESPN is making a movie about Bill Walsh and the rise of the 49ers. Walsh is going to be played by Robert Downey Jr. It is about Walsh building a dynasty from Walsh's perspective and everything he went through. Even though I've read a book about Walsh and watched Documentaries on him, still looking forward to watching the film.

Got to say, this training camp feels completely different from last year. Yes, there's been a lot more injury news than I would like to hear, particularly at WR and CB, which were already on the thin side (WR to start the year, at least). But it also seems like players across the board - vets and young guys - are more locked in than they were at this time last year.

Obviously Shanahan and Lynch put together a really good team leading into last offseason, but I was starting to feel that some of the internal competition was waning. It just seemed like a lot of guys were effectively being handed jobs without really having to earn them play in and play out. Obviously that's going to be true of some guys, but it seemed to be true of about 80% of the spots on both sides of the ball. This year, with the loss of some vets and the influx of young players, it just feels like more is at stake for these guys. Is Kevin Givens guaranteed anything if UDFA Sebastian Valdez outplays him? Certainly Kalia Davis isn't. Darrell Luter is in serious danger of losing his roster spot. The WR race feels pretty wide open. I'm hoping that dynamic fuels a strong season.

Williams ankle is apparently still really bothering him. Not great.
