Anyone could have signed him in the off-season, and the Twins signed him for a million bucks. When it is all said and done, Yankees will be leading the AL East. Very impressed what they did at the deadline today.

Better bullpen, starting pitch and offense on paper than the Jays. Everyone goes through a rough patch, and when Judge comes back next week- I expect the Yankees to take off. Disappointed overall with the Jays moves. The moves were okay, but I wish they could have made a bigger splash. Bednar went for a very reasonable price to New York. Other guys also that they could have targeted.

I mean I'm not impressed if this was our prized bat, but it's much less awful than us letting go of Wagner and leaving that spot open. End of the day I think France fits better than Wagner so I don't mind getting him, especially when I thought the deadline was already over & we just dilly dallied.

Idk why we didn’t go after more power though… I mean we’re a good contact hitting team and good with risp, would’ve been nice to add another power bat to clear the bases when needed… whatever man idk it is what it is

Santander needs a miracle turnaround heading into the postseason and we're fine!

Having 6 starters on our team that are arguably all legit #3-#5 starters is giving the analytical team orgasms as they think about managing the playoffs.

Get ready for the Berrios/Lauer platoon game

They must be upset that we don't have another Lefty starter. I'm sure there trying to find combos of two righties where they can line them up for 3 innings each no matter what.

Gausman has reverse splits, they'll platoon him with Bassitt

Toronto Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins speaks following MLB trade deadline - CP24

7:28 p.m. - Atkins’ hoping to get Bieber ‘back to his potential’

“Obviously the guy has performed very well and on really big stages, has been the best pitcher in the game at certain points, so that was important to us,” Atkins said when discussing Bieber.

“We’re going to take it one start at a time. He just made a rehab start, and he’ll make another one in the coming days.”

Bieber has not pitched in the MLB since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024, but has made four starts in the minor leagues and is believed to be nearing a return to the majors.

A two-time all star, Bieber won the Cy Young Award as the American League’s top pitcher in 2020.

He has recorded a 1.59 ERA in four rehab starts so far this season.

“It will be hard to surpass his ceiling, what he has accomplished,” said Atkins. “So, just getting him back to his potential would be him doing exceptionally well for us, so that’s what we’ll focus on with him, and we’re really, really glad that he’s here.”

7:24 p.m. - ‘We made our team better’

Atkins said he believes their grabs made the team better and is satisfied that the team’s goals were met.

“We were focused on prevention and adding to our pitching and I feel that we accomplished that goal,” he explained.

“We were also hoping to add to our offensive which we were able to do without subtracting from too many pieces that are already impacting our major league environment. So, that is a very good outcome, and some of the players that we’ve acquired will be here for some time.”

Atkins said he believes from an overall standpoint he feels very good about accomplishing the team’s goals.

7:22 p.m. - ‘A really good fit for for us’: Atkins comments on Bieber acquisition

Toronto added a couple of arms during their dealings, including former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for pitching prospect Khal Stephen.

“(Bieber’s) a really good fit for us,” said Atkins.

“We have some staff members that know Shane well, and you know, we do a lot of work on understanding every player in the game, but felt like we had a little more insight into him.”

“So, a really good fit from a teammate, from a character and just a drive and competitiveness standpoint, also where he is from a rehab standpoint. He fits very well for our already solid five-man rotation. Any good baseball team needs depth and options and we added that.”

7:20 p.m. - Atkins speaks on Jays’ deals made ahead of trade deadline

“We’re obviously fired up to be in the position that we’re acquiring talent, and we’re really excited for the organization, the fans, the players, the staff that have just earned this opportunity,” Atkins said.

“We feel that we were very aggressive at the deadline and were able to accomplish our goals and made the team better.”

Game 1 - Berrios / Lauer
Game 2 - Bieber
Game 3 - Bassitt / Gausman
Game 4 - Scherzer 3 innings followed by Bullpen Game

I give the deadline a B or B+
I'm happy enough with it.

I suspect Shatkins are more in the "target 88" category than the "Push for 98" philosophy, so I wasn't expecting all in moves. But knowing they would work around the fringes to a degree there pitching acquisitions were good.

Regarding Bieber's $16m player option and the $4m buyout, I assume it works like this.

Part #1 - Bieber has the option to opt out and become a FA, or exercise the $16M player option.
Part #2 - If he exercises his $16M player option, the Jays then have the choice of buying him out for $4m.

Correct?

Looking at the trades that were completed late.

I was shocked to see that the owner that showed his financial might the most today was possibly....... the Milwaukee Brewers owner??

Milwaukee was able to acquire Shelby Miller from Arizona who has been really good this season and didn't give up a single thing. They agreed to taking on the contract of Jordan Montgomery (who is getting paid $25M not to play in 2025).

And of course Tampa traded for Adrian Houser since his salary was basically nothing.

The $4M buyout is paid to Bieber even if he opts out and becomes a free agent. Essentially Bieber's deal when he signed it meant it was either 1 year/$14M (opts out to become a FA) or 2 years/$26M (opts in). The Jays don't have any option here.

Bieber is certainly going to opt out. Jays can then extend him a Qualifying Offer of around 21 million for next year.
