Kuminga to the lakers

Post#1 » by Saul Goodman » Thu Jul 31, 2025 10:49 am

Sign and trade

Gabe Vincent
Dalton knect

For

Jonathan Kuminga sign and trade 2 years 44 mill

Kuminga gets to get the Laker rub to raise his value in the next few years. He can be a perfect fit next to Luka LeBron and Reaves if he plays engaged on defence

Luka/reaves/kuminga/lebron/ayton

Smart/laravia/hachimura/hayes

Warriors get some shooting in Knecht and wash their hands off the Kuminga situation.

Perfect fit would be overselling it since he cant shoot. Is this even possible? Espns trademachine cant load lakers atm for some reason, but feels like knecht and gabe make less then kuminga signs for?

Another player probably needs to be added for Salary match, and a pick I would think.
Rui, Knecht and a protected first is probably closer.
Kuminga is turning down 2/45, so what do the lakers offer? Then match salary.

So, lebron at 40 yrs would be the best defender among the starters?

I dont even know who the worst defender in that starting group would be. You could make a case for any of the 4.

Pass from the Warriors as well. This is worse than the Phoenix and Sacramento offers we’ve already turned down.

Is Kuminga really a bad defender? He's inconsistent but sometimes he looks pretty decent and might be more consistent with a more consistent role.

I dont see any reason Golden State does this. Those 2 Lakers guys, they're not very good at basketball

He's got the physical tools, and when he's locked in he can be a pretty good POA defender. It's the mental side where he struggles, especially w/r/t team/help defense.

As a Jazz fan I’d love to see this happen. Would help the 2027 pick we own.

Nearly impossible to construct something tenable directly between the two teams for Kuminga…..

Kuminga’s base-year contract status means whatever he signs for, the Warriors have to receive a lot less salary back.

Meaning the Lakers would be receiving much more salary back than they’re sending out, if the deal is only with the Warriors. And the Lakers don’t have the cap space to do that.

So pretty much the only way to offset that is for the Lakers to send additional salary to another team (e.g. Jazz, Nets, Wizards) who can absorb it. Which makes it very complicated.

Setting aside that the Warriors, a team which is already going to be guard-heavy (with Curry, Podziemski, Hield, likely Melton, and potentially Payton or Seth Curry) doesn’t need 2 more guards while trading away one of their few big wings.

It just doesn’t really work money-wise, and almost certainly requires a third team to help make it work. (And believe me, it would be the Lakers who would have to incentivize that third team….. not the Warriors.)
If I don't have anything funny to say, can I still have a signature?

Do not want Kuminga, he wants a starting role also the trade doesn't work, I'm fine with having what we/Lakers have rather then Kuminga.

If he was willing to play engaged on defense, he'd be the perfect fit where he's at.

Lakers are hard capped at the First Apron, and only $1.1m under it currently. A deal with Kuminga starting around $21m would require LA to send out a little over $20m or more to be legal. This has them sending $15.5m. As sign and trades cannot happen once the season starts, At this time, La would have to include Maxi or Vanderbilt to be legal.

This suggestion is not feasible given Lakers cap situation.

Lakers are hard-capped at the 1st apron and are currently right on the edge of that line (with the Theiro contract).

The only way Lakers can make any trades at this point is if they send out more than they get back (while accounting for empty roster spots).

If Vincent + Knecht are outgoing -> the most Kuminga could be offered is ~$13M/yr (as they would be required to save enough room under the hard cap to fill the #14 roster spot).

Kuminga won't get any minutes on the Lakers either. He's not a very good player. Why are the Lakers doing this?

He looks the part of a defender due to his athletic profile, but...

He's a decent on ball defender vs certain match ups. More specifically, a player who doesnt use screens, a player who isnt crafty nor quick, etc.. He can look good vs iso guys who are more north south in their attacks.

He really struggles off ball, im talking zero awareness. No instinct for where the play is happening (if not involved) and no idea where the rebound will carom (unless he follows the trajectory, but then that means he's lost his man). If you know the defensive schemes the dubs run, then you'll see him miss more reads. That said, if you have good defenders amd rebounders around him, hell be least damaging as your on ball poa.

My hope is that Doug Christie can take him and hone those skills and make him a solid two way player. That’s really where is see his potential more than as a generic “star” scorer. He has all the tools and size and build to be an ideal modern switchable forward.
