The Celtics just bought the Sun, and they're moving to Boston.

Sorry to the fans in CT, but I think this is for the best.

(It also eliminates any chance of Paige picking the Sun over the Liberty in the future).

Wow. I'm sad for Sun fans, but it makes sense, and it's embarrassing Boston never had a WNBA team before honestly - they should have been there from the jump, and had they, then there never would have been a team in Connecticut to a community to lose. Sigh.

I hope that the Boston WNBA a) seriously considers changing the nickname away from "Sun", but b) really tries to keep a connection to the Connecticut Sun history and community.

I am curious what nickname they'll pick. I hope they don't try to hard to rhyme the ethnic Irish motif.

My first thought, which seems quite unlikely, was the Boston Suffragettes.

I'm seeing reports and a statement from the league suggesting that approval of the sale and move is not a foregone conclusion. Sounds like there's going to be some wrangling before this is a done deal.

Here's the WNBA statement:
'Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams. As part of our most recent expansion process, in which three new franchises were awarded to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia on June 30, 2025, nine additional cities also applied for WNBA teams and remain under active consideration. No groups from Boston applied for a team at that time and those other cities remain under consideration based on the extensive work they did as part of the expansion process and currently have priority over Boston. Celtics’ prospective owner Bill Chisholm has also reached out to the league office and asked that Boston receive strong consideration for a WNBA franchise at the appropriate time."

Which is weird because the Celtics owner who is reportedly involved in buying the Sun is a minority owner named Steve Pagliuca, not Bill Chisholm.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

The league wants that expansion money, and they know Boston has deep pockets

If CT sells, they get nothing

I’m not holding out hope though.

Looks like Phee sprained her ankle at the end of the 3rd and didn't come back.

Hopefully she's OK.

I have no idea why Phee was still in the game at that point. That game was over from the first qtr when it was like 40-17

Hindsight is 20/20. Obviously knowing she got hurt, you would make a different decision. But, IMO, playing a star 26 minutes through 3 quarters in a blowout is not out of line. If you take your foot off the gas too early and the other team makes a run, all of a sudden you have to put your star back in and refocus to play for real and close it out, instead of just making sure and being able to coast to the W with no stress.

BTW, I saw an ESPN article on the game which said:
McBride led Minnesota with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting -- all of her made field goals were 3-pointers in the first half. She went a perfect 8-for-8 from distance in the first 20 minutes of the game, setting a WNBA record.

Someone was absent from school on the day the class learned 3x8.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

Bria Hartley just dropped a completely unnecessary shoulder check on Sab that sent her to the ground. The sort of play that would send the AI hot take machine into a tailspin for weeks if it happened to somebody else.

And Bria definitely walks the line between physical and dirty. She's the one that yanked Angel's hair earlier this season.

Mystics started so hot.

ATL was just too damn much. I hate to bag one BG but they really don't need her. Bri is a stud. Bri and 4 guards or her and Hillman is too much for most teams to deal with
