Should the Spurs lock in De'Aaron Fox?
Now eligible for four year, $229 million extension
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I'd trade him before the reality of that contract sets in. Either extend him and look to trade him within the next year, or just do it now.
If Harper and Castle are anything close to what the Spurs think they are, Fox is not needed in SAS at all, and that money can be put to use in better ways.

Re: Should the Spurs lock in De'Aaron Fox?
Is it possible the winner of the Fox trade was actually Chicago? lol.
Spurs may pay Fox top dollar when they have 2 young guards. Costed them 3 1sts + 5 2nds
Kings got LaVine, Nique Clifford, Saric, a 2031 Wolves 1st, and i think they have 2 2nds leftover after wasting some on JVal/LaRavia.
Bulls got off LaVines contract, and got their own 1st back (Noa Essengue).

I don't think Spurs do this, they'll end up trading him.
But for who and where? Who knows.

I think Fox is a good player, but a 3 man backcourt of Vassell/Harper/Castle looks pretty good to me
I posted Fox to Miami months ago-with was for Rozier/Robinson/JJJ/#20/unprotected future pick I think
This will also be a test of the new CBA-no way, in this environment, that SA should max Fox. Offer him 4/$160 million tops
And yes, Chi did win this trade

Be wary of big extensions.
Fox is a great player, but if you have a couple of younger guards that might suffice, time to move on. I assume Fox wants the max.

It's a moot question. Undoubtedly they came to an understanding before trading for him, and you can't go back on your commitment. That's not how the NBA business works.

Do you think they agreed on a max deal?

We'll probably find out tomorrow. Whatever was agreed on, that's what he'll get.

An extension prediction sounds like any easy layup here. They had to have talked about this at trade time, right? We can argue whether the dollar amount is fair, but it's likely already a done deal. Maybe it's max, maybe a bit less, but I don't think this will be drawn out.

Ask yourself if his trade value increases after signing that extension. Then you’ll have your answer.

They should trade him. And I would go as far as saying they should trade him this season.
Castle and Harper are the future.
I could see something w/ the Wolves. Naz and Conley for Fox. Not sure on picks.
Naz is a excellent fit next to Wemby IMO and Conley as a vet backup is ideal.

And then we can finally see the end of these Wolves need to get rid of Gobert and start Naz at center threads. Worth it for that alone.
And Vassell was the starter most of last year, Castle got his starts when Vassell or Fox were hurt. He's still there for the 3 guard rotation even without Conley.

Spurs won't turn around and betray a player who demanded a trade to San Antonio by re-trading him within his first year. 2/3 years from now, it may be a different story... but not right away.
