Yossi Gozlan‬

The Boston Celtics reduce their payroll and luxury tax by a total of $50 million by trading Georges Niang.

They’re now just $1.7 million above the first apron and $9.4 million above the luxury tax line.

They also create a $8.2 million trade exception.

Brad Stevens will try to use those trade exceptions (Niang, Porzingis) next year.

I estimate the Celtics have now reduced roster expenses by $286 million since the start of the offseason by trading:

-Jrue Holiday for Anfernee Simons
-Kristaps Porinzgis for Georges Niang
-Niang for nothing

They’d clear another $40 million by getting under the tax.

A Simons trade to get the last bit under the luxury tax would not surprise me now

Spotrac has RJ Luis on a 2-way so the $8.2 is the total of Niang's Salary.

Perhaps Luis will be our third 2-way player and (still unsigned) Amari Williams will receive a roster contract as the 14th (and cheapest possible) potential signee to complete the roster. Or Luis is just cut and his salary doesn't count on our books??

Or we are one two-for-one Anfernee Simons trade to finishing the roster and dropping under the tax???

It's just a matter of time, like it always has been.

It's going to be Minott. They signed him to give him an opportunity

I guess there's Walsh too.

I have two thoughts on the Celtics offseason so far:

1. Yikes!

2. This is both unsettling and sort of fun at the same time.

That's a great point, playing time for both Walsh and Minott now.

A Simons trade could return a PF and also get us under the tax. Simons to MEM for Brandon Clarke and John Konchar was one such option bandied about...

Yea, but it sucks to be giving up picks to tear it down. Usually, when you are breaking up a championship core, you are trading away Pippen, Kukoc, Steve Kerr, Longley etc and getting picks back in the process. We were pick neutral trading Jrue, pick neutral trading KP, and now sending away two seconds to get off Niang.

Reminders:

-- Until Tatum comes back, the Celtics will be without their ENTIRE previous PF/C rotation, plus Jrue.
-- The only guy in the available half of the previous rotation who can handle significantly more minutes is Hauser. Brown, White and Pritchard, by way of contrast, are two-way and/or energy players who already were logging substantial minutes.
Banned temporarily for, among other sins, being "Extremely Deviant".

Hauser can play the 4. Tillman can play the 4. You could play Amari and Garza together in a double big lineup (since Garza can shoot and Amari can defend the perimeter decently).

JB can be a small ball 4 (like how guys like Jimmy Butler, Caleb Martin and Josh Hart have played the 4..and JB matched up well in the playoffs vs Siakam).

Minott can play the 4, as can Walsh..

Plus apparently we just signed Chris Boucher..who of course can play the 4.,.

Plus, having perfect positional balance across the roster is not imperative, during a bridge year.

Now simons for a PF (like GG Jackson) and some filler so we are under the luxury and ready to drive the tank through the bridge apocalyptic season.
