We better not let him become an unrestricted free agent.

I'm beyond befuddled by the current handling of Trae's extension. It's one thing if he's rejecting what you're offering, but to not even offer anything at this point is strange.

Agreed.

I thought for sure they'd begin negotiations with a short-term, low ball offer just to get the ball rolling.

No offer at all -- when he can opt out next season -- is mind boggling.

It's seems really odd that they would let all the offseason goodwill they've built up go to waste.
Something doesn't sound quite right to me.

Giving Trae a big contract could make him untradeable like Joe all those years ago.

If Trae can't win this year, we will have to admit that he is not a legit #1

And with Darryn Peterson and Mikel Brown on the horizon, now the Hawks have options

I keep seeing this! Let me ask you - who is the teams reliable 2nd option?
There's a hope that certain players can/might be...but there isn't an certified established 2nd option.

Are you guys expecting us to give Trae the max when we already know his trade value doesn't justify it?

Word is he hasn't received any time of offer.

No one said it has to be a max offer...

I think the Hawks were slow rolling it, waiting to see what Fox may get. I think they were surprised he got maxed...now what do they do.
But hey....if Trae decides he's not signing an extension and will TEST FAcy next offseason....now what?
Yeah yeah...no trade value blah blah blah....but all it takes is ONE capspace team....Nets (why they're not offering Cam a big deal)....then try and get Giannis......juuuuuuust saying.

It makes sense then.

He wants the max or bonuses.

Discussions with his agent are probably happening regarding his bonuses. For instance, if he wins MVP, if he makes All NBA teams, and so on.

This will be the case with Dyson Daniels as well. For example: Evan Mobley received a $30m bonus for being named DPOY.

No plans for Trae Young, Atlanta to engage in extension talks this summer

Aug. 10, 2025, 12:15 PM EDT

After Luka Doncic inked his three-year, $165 million extension with the Lakers, followed by De'Aaron Fox landing his own four-year, $229 million extension with San Antonio, leaguewide curiosity naturally shifted to another prominent point guard: Atlanta's Trae Young. Unlike Dončić and Fox, after all, Young did not have to wait until early August to become eligible for a contract extension. He's been able to sign a new deal with the Hawks since July 6.. Yet league sources tell me there are no plans for Young and the Hawks to engage in extension talks this summer. This, though, does not necessarily come as a surprise.

Sources say Young's side has actually been resigned for some time to the prospect of seeing out the final guaranteed year on his current contract rather than securing an extension, like his current contract, worth in excess of $200 million. He'd then have to make a decision about his $49 million player option for 2026-27. There was a time, sources say, when Young's camp viewed him as an optimal potential playmaking partner for Victor Wembanyama. He has since moved to CAA but was repped at the time by Rich Paul, who appeared determined to place one of the All-Star guards then on the Klutch Sports roster — Young, Fox or Darius Garland — alongside Wembanyama.

Let's, however, be clear: No one is suggesting that Young is actively pushing to get out of Atlanta. The Hawks have surrounded Young with numerous two-way wings and a new pick-and-pop partner thanks to their recent trade to acquire Kristaps Porziņģis. He's never really played with a scoring forward of Porziņģis' caliber.

I'm told another reason for Atlanta and Young's mutual optimism about next season: The strong relationship that the 26-year-old has forged with Quin Snyder. The Hawks' head coach sang Young's praises for his growing voice as a leader and heightened defensive efforts when I made a trip to Atlanta in March. There's real synergy between coach and point guard.

The omens of an ending relationship, and it sounds like the one leaving is the team.

I figured it was inevitable but didn't see it happening this way.

Business is business...Trae doesn't deserve the supermax and he doesn't appear to be communicating that he's willing to take less.

Now, if he has, let me know, but otherwise, my loyalty will remain with our front office, and not Trae/Klutch being disappointed that the Hawks haven't made an offer.
