Chi Bulls/Cle Cavs
This trade needs help to be legal, so what can you add to it? Is it salvageable?
Bulls trade Jalen Smith and S&T Josh Giddey ($25M - $30M)
Cavs trade Garland and ....... (CPJ, Tyson, Merrill)?
Bulls get a previous AllStar PG young enough to lead the youth movement.
Cavs get some size in the backcourt.

This is a more realistic deal if the Bulls signed Giddey to a contract now at that range and agreed to trade him in January. As it is, the Cavs can't accept a sign-and-trade while being above the 1st apron. To do the deal now, the Cavs would effectively need to drop $30.3m, which equates to offloading Hunter and Wade and not taking anything back. I'm not sure if that can be arranged but it's not something the Cavs would do anyway.
Note that I said "more realistic" and not "realistic". I think there's a big value gap.

Just looking to confirm what Giddey brings to the table that Garland lacks. He has length, but does that equate to him being a better defender?
Well at least we're not Detroit!

It hasn't yet, and I'd need to see a bigger sample size from Giddey on the shooting front before I'd consider anything like this. Giddey really struggled off-ball with OKC. Garland can provide spacing as a catch and shoot option when Mitchell has the ball.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

I like Giddey, but if his market value was 25 to 30M, surely a team would have put an offer in by now, or the Bulls would've worked something out. Cavs need some sweetener here, and it's N0T Jalen Smith...

Rather keep Giddey, not high on Garland and he's constantly injured like every other Cav.

Garland is vastly more valuable than Giddey.

Availability...
Next to Mitchell, I can see Giddey being prefered, but, Garland is more valauable, so Bulls need to bridge the gap, and 0 chance of S&T, Giddey would have to sign and the deal negotiated post Jan 15th.
Defense wins draft lotteries!

The Cavs, as an organization, need to start prioritizing postseason availability over regular season wins, and not just with regard to Garland. Mitchell hasn't finished the last two playoff runs healthy.

Sure, but I'd start with Garland, he's been a bigger problem IMO.

In 2023-24, he was rushed back from a broken jaw in February while still 15lbs light. JBB was coaching for his job, but with the benefit of hindsight, he should've recovered for another month until he got more weight back on. It didn't help that Mitchell went out almost immediately as Garland got back on the court. Garland played significant minutes in 31 of the Cavs final 32 regular season games.
Last season, the playoff toe injury was a re-aggrevation. He played significant minutes in 27 of the Cavs last 32 regular games.
Three of the four playoff series we've lost have been with home court advantage. We've had one or more key starters injured in three out of four losses. It's time for the Cavs to be less concerned with regular season standings.

Don't think the Cavs are looking to make this big of a change in a year when the east is weak and they could make the Finals.

Cavs probably owed a first or two but I like the premise. I think Giddy is a better fit with Mitchell.

Giddey shot reasonably well last year but I need a year or two more of it to think he can play in the playoffs.

Re: Chi Bulls/Cle Cavs
Giddey's never been a bad player but maximizing his value requires he be the lead offense initiator. It's ultimatley why he didn't work out in OKC, and I don't think playing him alongside Mitchell in Cleveland would be ideal either.
In fact, Cleveland already acquired the perfect backcourt complement to Mitchell from Chicago earlier this offseason in Lonzo Ball.
