This is worse than the floods of 2010 and I was getting pelted by hail as I took a snow shovel to get water away from the house in that flood.

In 2010 the Milwaukee River rose to an all-time high of 10.5". It's currently 11.2" and it's still raining.

I don't mind a good storm but this is devastating to a lot of people

Woof yea it got way worse than I thought. What’s interesting is initially my area looked to only get a 30 min dumping and then the gates of hell opened and it rained literally all night until now with lots of lightning. And more is coming soon.

Went to bed around midnight after checking to make sure the sump pump was still working. Woke up to close to ankle depth water in the basement in some areas. Pump was still working but it just got overwhelmed by the sheer volume of groundwater. Thankfully we were spared the worst, but looking at some of the social media pictures out there is wild. Stay safe everyone, and definitely invest in a wet/dry shop vac.

It seemed like it dumped on us a few times since last night but the rain gage only says about 1.75 inches. Not bad at all just west of madison. I hope you're all safe over there and didn't lose anything that can't be replaced. Basement water is a bitch.

Does anyone know if I should start with a water damage mitigation company or start by filing a claim with my home insurance?

I would contact insurance. Unfortunately, flood insurance and homeowners insurance are different things. We were lucky in that fema helped quite a bit when we had flooding or we would have been effed. I'll stop there to avoid getting political. Ill just say I hope your insurance covers it.

They only cover $5k I talked to an agent today, so I'm probably mostly SOL.

This flooding is also in the middle of the huge addition and remodel project that we are doing. My house is just a complete disaster and my bank account is shot, too bad my daughter isn't starting kindergarten next month to get 1/2 the daycare bill off the payroll.
