Which versions of Hakeem do you take over 1990 Ewing?

Post#1 » by Ursusamericanus » Sat Jan 14, 2023 4:04 am

Ewing had a clear-cut peak in the 1989-1990 season, putting up the following numbers:

28.6/10.9/2.2/4.0/1.0 on 55%/78% and a TS of 59.9%. His BPM was 5.5, along with 13.5 WS and a VORP of 6.0.

Hakeem was clearly a better player overall, but how many of his seasons do you take over Ewing's 1989-1990 masterpiece?

Hmm......it's an interesting question [to me] because Hakeem has a bunch of seasons that I'd list as "maybes".

The only seasons that I'm 100% certain I'd take over peak Ewing are '93-'95. So that's only three seasons that are for sure.

HOWEVER, I think one could make a case that Hakeem has 6 other years that are at least as good as peak Ewing: any one of '86-'90 and '92 is roughly comparable, imo. (I'm narrowly taking '91 out of contention ONLY because he misses a third of the season; it would otherwise be comparable, too).

I won't say any of those are necessarily better than peak Ewing (though one could credibly make the case for several of them); at the very least they're super-damn close, though.

Very tough to answer. For sure 93-95 pretty easily. Hard to say beyond that though.

87-95 to me are relatively sure things.

86 and 96 are also possibilities but I am less certain on them being better than 1990 Ewing.

I'd take 1987-90 and 1993-95 over peak Ewing. 1986 is close as well.

I'd take 1987-89 and 1993-95 over 1990 Ewing (I'm not that moved by him). 1986 and 1990 is close too.

Every prime year I guess. So, maybe 85 to 96?

1990 Ewing was very, very good, and gets overlooked because he didn't run as fast and wasn't quite a silky smooth as Olajuwon and Robinson, but he was huge. Olajuwon has many great seasons but can say that maybe only his 3 peak years, 1993-95 were clearly better.

Essrntially every prime hakeem season from 86 to 95 is better except for maybe the injury concerns years

1986-1989 and 1993-1995. ( Some of them are debatable but overall I put these year up cause I do believe that Hakeem have better case or even Clear especially in 93-95 )
Hakeem is comfortably a better player and Have higher quality year

Why 1986 and not 1990?

I'd take Ewing over the pre 93 versions of Hakeem on offense, but Hakeem is better on defense, as I believe Ewing peaked on D during Riley and when he was spending less offensive energy. Because Hakeem's game seems like it always translated well to playoffs I'd probably give him the slight edge in almost all his prime seasons.

Probably this though not super positive about the tail end '80s and early '90s. All in all, give me Hakeem.

I would take 1987-90; 1993-95 Hakeem over 1990 Ewing.
