Non Championship Decade Draft - Discussion

Draft Rules:

1. All NBA seasons from 1979-80 to 2024-25 are eligible, subject to the restrictions outlined below.

2. You will be required to draft a total of 8 players in 8 rounds. Each of your players must play a minimum of 8 minutes in your rotations. Any player chosen in a season that is pre-merger will have a multiplier of 0.85 applied against their actual fga, rounded to closest 0.1.

3. Your team will be allowed a combined total of 88.0 FGA with a minimum of 3.0 FGA per player corresponding with the specific seasons indicated for each player. NOTE: You may pick a player whose actual FGA number was lower than 3.0, but you still be charged 3.0 for that player.

4. Each player you select must have played at least 50% of regular season games in the season selected. He needs to play at least 50% of his games for an eligible franchise.

5. You can pick any player in a season that is part of a decade where he never won a ring.

For that matter, a decade starts from 9-0 season and ends in 8-9 season, e.g. nineties is 1989-90 to 1998-99.

A player won a ring in a given year if he's marked as such in basketball reference.

6. We will be doing a modified snake draft. It will go like this: ABBABABA.

7. Players will get a maximum of a 2-hour window to make their selection when they are on the clock. If you still have not chosen a player by then, or if the player you have chosen is ineligible, you will be skipped. Also, if you know ahead of time that you won't be available to make your pick on the clock then please PM your selection to another participant. NOTE: If you miss one pick and have failed to make it by the time your next pick comes around, you will be skipped.

8. The clock will be turned off between 12 midnight and 9 AM EDT.

9. Draft order will be completely randomized.

10. After you have made your draft selection, please quote and/or PM the person that goes after you so they will know that it is their turn and they are on the clock. You may not change your pick after it has been made, even if the next person in the order has not picked yet. Please note that the clock starts whenever the previous drafter has either made their pick or their two-hour window has expired, even if the next person is not quoted.

11. The winner of the draft will be determined by polls. AI will be used as a single vote when a matchup is tied and stuck.

Team Roster Page Rules:

You will be responsible for creating a roster page for your fantasy team. Here are the things that you will be required to include on your roster page:

. Draft selections
. The most important of all, you must show the total FGA per player on your roster AND a total sum of each players FGA to display that it is under the required 88.0 FGA

-All of the above must be completed before playoffs/rankings

Fun fact- I believe Tim Duncan is the player with the longest career within the time frame who is completely ineligible in this game- every one of his 19 seasons from 97-98 all the way to 15-16 cannot be selected. He's also probably the only player with ineligibility in three different decades.

Kareem would have the edge in this regard if the eligibility went back to the start of the 70s.

This will force people out of typical seasons for a good number of all time greats, but this is also a DEEP pool.

I am in and thank you. DB for running this. I too am a little bit concerned about the great depth in this draft. After looking at the pool a bit more I'm not sure the restriction kills off that much top end talent.

Definitely out:

- Duncan
- D-Rob
- Wade
- Steph
- Doc

Available but decidedly post- or pre-prime to the point where they probably won't get picked at all:

- Kobe
- Bird
- Tatum (his rookie year could be useful)
- SGA
- Moses

This is bearing in mind the eligible versions of some other stars will be worse than usual although still All-Star/All-NBA level.

And that's not counting the many secondary stars who get nerfed or removed entirely: Pippen, Manu, Ray, Sheed, the Gasol brothers, Dumars, Klay, Draymond, Brown, White, etc. Role players take a similar hit, possibly even more so since the best ones are usually tied to championship teams.

It really depends on how many people sign up, but the pool does take some significant hits. The 80s really only adds MJ and maybe a couple others as likely options.

We currently have eight guys. That can be workable with a 90s to now timeframe (or even 00s to now). Though I'd like to get 10 and keep it 80s, having 80s MJ and Hakeem, 90s Shaq, etc. is kinda part of the concept. If we're stuck at signups, I'll change the timeframe.

There are some off-prime years I am genuinely curious to see evaluated here.

As a low pick there's a couple of guys available in this that I really have no idea who they will be perceived.

I personally have a clear top 7 in this draft, making 8 an iffy spot to be in, but I have no idea if others agree on that top 8.
