Improve the 3 to 35%+ (Easy one IMO - he has the shot, it just hasn’t gone in since his rookie year).

Then the hard one - defense.

If Sharpe stays the same player from last year but gets his 3PT % up and becomes league average at defense your looking at a outcome that is exactly what was projected when he was drafted - elite scoring SG with prototypical size and a unique smoothness to his game - able to score at all 3 levels - decent on defense - not really a ‘create for others’ guy but more of a finisher - never will be a dog effort wise.

That’s exactly the scouting report he had coming out. 25ppg potential with some warts (creating, motor).

As others said - no one sans Jalen Williams would go before Sharpe in a redraft. You still take him over an elite role player like Dyson. Especially on this team, we need the Sharpe player profile much more than a SG version of Camara.

Scoot on the other hand - your looking at a half dozen big points of player development before he can even be a average starter IMO - shooting, defensive IQ, off ball play, finishing, fouling, turnovers. I could probably think of a few more.

I am not ‘out’ on Scoot but think there path to fulfilling their pre-draft archetype is not close. Sharpe really has 2 spots to improve (and 3PT shooting he already showed out on as a rookie). Scoot is a total work in progress.
I'm taking Dyson over Sharpe in a redraft undertaken today.

In a heartbeat!!!

Is he related to Carlos? I sure didn't like him.

son

And a helluva basketball player--so is his brother. I could see a world were both are better than their dad.

EDIT: And yeah, I interacted with Carlos Boozer a few times...not a fan.

Hopefully the boys don't screw over the team that drafts them like their dad did.

A reminder with Sharpe -- in 2023-2024, he played in only 32 games, starting 25. Adductor injury. Add that to his lesser basketball experience beyond high school, and he has to take a significant leap this coming season for him to earn a bag on his 2nd contract and remain a Trail Blazer. It's on Sharpe.

Scoot's situation is a little different as a more hyped prospect. The reality in the first half of his rookie year was pretty ugly. Then he looked better. Now, he's an NBA player. But like Sharpe, will he (can he) be a starter on a competitive playoff team in Portland? If the answer is no on both of them, there's time for the Blazers to pivot while Jrue and Dame start in 26-27. Toumani, Grant, and Deni (collectively) can cover most of the minutes at forward while having Toumani play some at the 2.

That's the negative outcome if Shaedon and Scoot don't cut it. I have fewer doubts about Scoot becoming a quality starter. He may not be the kind of PG I prefer, but the guy loves playing. I never really saw Billups as a hall of fame player. I guess I still don't. But I do see enough in Scoot that he could be a Billups-ish type of PG.

it's not a good thing that this late in their rookie-scale deals, we are still debating the worthiness of Sharpe and Scoot as actual starters. And it's a very real possibility that next season, neither will start. So I'll say again: if Sharpe in his 4th season and Scoot in his 3rd season are both backups and not starters, the Blazers failed at drafting for 2 consecutive years. A 7th pick and a 3rd pick riding the bench is a poor resume for a scouting department

We could have had Dyson, Coward, Amen, Camara and Edey as a starting line up. Schmitz can kick rocks with along with Joe.

Yeah, I don't get all the hype with Schmitz, the results have not met the notoriety he has received...

Return to Portland Trail Blazers
