Blackcoat's Daughter is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, but in fairness, I went in with zero expectations to that one. That's the opposite of Longlegs which had impossible hype to live up to. Let me know what you think.

I definitely liked Nosferatu more than Northman. With Eggers' horror movies, I find myself enjoying them more with each subsequent watch. Eggers writes some incredible dialogue, but damn does it take me a few watches to catch the nuances because of the period-accurate approach

I was very pleased watching Nosferatu. It was a nice theater experience, and the actors/story were solid.

Eggers seems to be polarizing. The Northman reminded me somewhat of the manga and anime Vinland Saga, until it got weird. Nosferatu had my attention from start to finish. I think Lily Rose Depp actually acted her ass off too.

What games are we playing currently?

I'm locked into Act 3 of Expedition 33, which to me is hands down Game of the Year for me personally.

I've still got Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in my backlog. Disgraceful.

On the shooter front, I'm intrigued by the new Battlefield teasers. It looks like a return to early 2010s Battlefied, which in an gaming climate where Call of Duty has become so sweaty that you'd have to be a psychopath to play it every night if you hold down a full time job, could become a huge hit. The gameplay looks nice and strategic.

Helldivers 2 is going through a rough patch. Lots of bugs right now. I stopped playing for a minute, I wanna just do RPGs

I already got my tickets for Saturday. 2022 and 2023 straight up spoiled the horror fans, and I think 2024 and, so far, 2025 have struggled to keep up. But Bring Her Back was a gem and I've heard nothing but hype for Weapons (Jordan Peele fired his agents after he lost the bidding war to produce it).

The indy horror scene feels like it's on the rise. Indy movies are getting picked up more since companies see horror as easy profits, and I've seen some incredible work done on shoestring budgets and out of Youtube horror shorts crews. Beezel, Best Wishes to All, and Milk and Serial are all Youtube Shorts that wound up expanding into full-length quality horrors. Plus, the Phillipou bros have all the juice right now.

There’s a lot of quality shorts on YT . I’m going to check all of those out. I’m being lazy; do you have a list of corresponding movies they spawned? Otherwise I just search them.

Milk and Serial went straight to Youtube in full form. It bugged me out because I'm used to these dudes doing comedy stuff

Unfortunately, the short that blew up and became Best Wishes to All (titled: Best Regards to All) seems to have been taken down since the full length movie hit Shudder. So, now we just have trailers. It's the weirdest of the bunch I mentioned.

Beezel's also fully on youtube. The first 25 minutes were originally a stand-alone horror short. But they got such good feedback, that they wrote two more stories connected to the Beezel entity and made it a full movie. This one's also free on Prime and Tubi.

Then for the Youtube short horror heads, these are fairly well-known fire worth peeping. I'd throw in Lights Out and Laura Hasn't Slept (aka Smile), but the real short films don't seem to be available anymore and a lot of people have already seen 'em.

I think this might be my most controversial opinion (besides my thoughts on Evangelion), but I cannot for the life of me get into Elden Ring

I've tried. I must have started at least 5 times. It's not a difficulty thing, I've beaten the first boss multiple times, I made it through the fort or whatever that's southeast of the starting area, I've made it to the hold or whatever

I just can't get myself invested enough in the world or story to care enough to keep playing. It's a direction thing, like sure most modern games go too far with waypoints and stuff, but Elden Ring is too far in the opposite direction for me. I like games where I can sink my teeth into the world, but I struggle to find a reason to dig into it because it doesn't really have a hook for me

Like, to me New Vegas is the best in terms of what I call cascading storytelling, where going to a place will give you multiple directions to go in, each of which have their own unique stories which then themselves give you even more potential directions until you cross the event horizon and the quests start circling back to ones you've already done, Ouroboros style

I can tell Elden Ring is a great game, it just doesn't appeal to me personally.

Heh I don’t know if anyone here grew up on Pokémon but I’ve been playing some fanmade roms and they’re great. Dave the Diver is next on Switch. Heard it was really good. FF7 after…and then I gotta play baldur’s gate or else I heard I’m gonna get my ass beat

Nah I don’t think I can get into Elden Ring too. You have to really hunt the lore.

For what it’s worth though, when I worked in the games industry and I was doing some market research for a team-based soulslike game, I heard some really moving stories about games like Elden Ring. Stuff like how they taught them really important life lessons. One dude was talking about how he was in a bad place in life, suicidal even, and the game was the only thing he was looking forward to.

For me it's the difficulty. I play games to relax. That game isn't for me.

If you use summons, it makes the game kind of a cakewalk, like I beat the first boss without him even attacking me, but when I tried that, it kind of took the fun away cause if it's easy and I'm also not invested in the story, there's nothing for me to really focus on.

OP 1157:

Well know we know why God Valley happened. I always thought the devil fruits were kind of a weird "crown jewel" because if they were what was stolen, Rocks would've already had them and not used them. But this makes way more sense, especially for why Roger got involved

It's the week of school spinoffs for me.

Finished up my Hero Academia: Vigilante. It was good. Not the best, but MHA has always had its own charm and the characters are fun. MHA final season is out on Oct 5th...I'll miss it. Heard it didn't end the best, but I think for the longest, I feel like it's carried the mantle of the Big 3 the best, and I appreciate that a lot.

Looking forward to Gen V's release next month.

The ending is, fine

Like I would say JJK has a pretty bad ending, MHA is just kinda meh

And you can tell Horikoshi isn't really happy with it, cause he wrote a whole epilogue chapter and then drew some more art of what the cast got up to after the story ended

I just always felt like MHA had the potential to really flesh itself out, to have the story take place over multiple years as the characters grow into adults and pro heroes in their own rights, plus it lost a lot of the earlier arcs' ability to put other characters in the spotlight, so in the end it's really just about the 3 main kids Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki. It's a lot like Naruto in that regard, where there are a lot of theoretically very interesting characters, but the story itself kind of fades them into the background.

MHA's cast being so big was a disservice to its self. In terms of endings, MHA definitely ended on a higher note than JJK, even with the expanded ending for JJK.

It was just very sloppy and I think the author was glad to have been done with it.

I finished Expedition 33 last night. That was one of the most brutal endings to an RPG that I've ever seen. 10/10 game would play again.

I'm halfway through Wuchang Fallen Feathers and I'm loving it. Its like Bloodborne in ancient China. Anyone looking for a soulslike, this is a really good one.

Return to New York Knicks
