DEN - MEM (Watson for Pippen)

Post#1 » by esvl » Fri Aug 15, 2025 5:46 pm

Watson

for

Pippen

DEN fills the biggest hole by getting a cost-controlled backup pg on a rookie contract who had a breakthrough season and will certainly have a bright future in the NBA.

MEM solves the surplus of guards in the current roster by acquiring an elite defensive monster, who can defend big wings, and still young to be able to develop offensive skills beyond corner 3pt shooting.

Man, I'd much rather have Watson, tbh? He is young, he is a good defender, isn't a horrid shooter, and he came in the league so raw. I also am a big believer, though, I had him in the first round in my mock at the draft.

I would rather have Watson. But Denver might like Pippen’s rookie contract extending the extra season (or two if they choose not to extend him early).

With the depth Denver built this offseason, I think it’s worth it?

For Memphis, I would want to go get another PG after this trade but I think you take this as is and figure that out.

First, Denver doesn't need backup pg. With Bruce Brown as backup combo guard they won it all, so they are set.

But, it would be hard to say no to this. I like Watson. But, I really like Pippen Jr too.

With this move Nuggets get under tax. But more importantly next season if they extend Braun and Watson they will be over 2nd apron. So it would be smarter to have Pippen Jr, resign Braun, and some of our backups to longer bigger deals (Brown, THJ, JVal) than Watson from cap perspective.

We saw Boston dismantle their championship team because of 2nd apron, it is new reality of NBA.

Watson is a 22y old elite defender and shot-blocker. Similar to Eason who will ask for 20+. We can resign him at 7-8 and use him to guard big wings. There is no one else who could do it in the current roster.

Watson is entering his 4th year, and is still a mess on offense, in a way that's more harmful than his positive on defense, a team like Denver that relies on offense first and had lots of success leveraging their high IQ into some successful zone defenses, can give up on him for a reliable backup point.
For Memphis, I don't buy the too much guards arguments, Ja is injury prone and they have only SPJ and Jerome to run the point, they also lost Bane on ball game, they could use a big wing defender like Watson, he still has hope, and they can afford to gamble.

Small looked really great, like almost ready, in the Summer League. And there is also Vince Williams Jr.

No idea who Small is :) VWJ was very good 2 years ago, but last year he barely played and that was with Wells out.

SPJ is a better player overall, is our best poa defender and on a better contract. I’m good not to mention let GG and Vince battle for those minutes you trying to give to Watson. If his defense was that impactful he would’ve been a priority for the Nuggets, he is one of the guys who will lose minutes with Bruce and Hardaway added.

This would make Denver's front court a little thin but Pippen is a pretty dang nice player. I'd easily do this if I was Denver. not sure why Memphis would, though.

As it looks rn Watson is the one who will not lose any minutes. Brown will replace Westbrook as combo guard, Hardaway will take minutes from Strawther as of the bench shooter, and Valanciunas will take minutes as backup C from Jordan and Nnaji. Watson will still be backup sf, pf, in an important role helping to cover for Valanciunas as help defender, and primary big wings defender off the bench.

He will also start for Gordon if he is injured, which was the case last season.

...and I still like SPJ.

Point taken but that doesn’t change my view of both players.

It wasn't intention to change it
I would still say yes as Nuggets fan, primary for financial reasons, you would still say no, as you explained with good arguments

EDIT your team made good signing with PJ Hall. He is NBA player, if given chance could be better find than Huff.

PJ has a pathway onto the main roster if he can excel at being a center. Set screens, finish at the rim, be physical on defense and rebound.

He can do all of this + hit some 3s and block some shots

If the Nuggets thought they could re-sign Watson for $7 mill, they'd probably be thrilled. I think they're worried that he's going to end up getting $15 somewhere else.

Remember that given how little he played in college, it's almost like he came straight out of high school, and he's only 22. He's only going to get better.

I haven't watched Pippen much, but the stats look good. From a pure contractual standpoint, I could see them doing this deal.
