They painted themselves into a corner firing Ujiri a year early and then going through some terrible candidates list and not even giving themselves a chance to find a viable alternative.

Here's what happened:
- MLSE got rid of the President role for the Maple Leafs
- MLSE fires Masai Ujiri, but swears it had nothing to do with cost cutting measures and that they would be hiring a new President
- MLSE says Masai Ujiri wasn't fired for his leadership or bad culture or because of the cost of his new contract
- MLSE insists they will hire a new President of Basketball Ops
- MLSE leaks to Shams that Bobby Webster is the new President of Basketball Ops
- MLSE shares statement saying Bobby Webster is the GM and there is no President of Basketball Ops

Simply put, they got rid of the President role, saved money, and changed nothing about the decision-making in the front office.

Happy for Bobby, he seemed like the best man for the job but man was it ever dumb to fire Masai. We didn't gain anything by hiring Bobby, we already had him and it wasn't like we had to get rid of Masai because Bobby was so great he deserved the promo...whats done is done, maybe he surprises us, maybe he get to choose his GM and it only makes sense to follow suit

The update in the thread title is wrong. Technically he was not named the team's new President of Basketball Operations, just the team's new head basketball decision maker, and he is still the GM by title.

Keep in mind, Masai himself did not become the team's POBO until 2016 when Jeff Weltman briefly became the GM of the team for 1 season. For Masai's first 3 seasons at the helm, he was not the President of Basketball Operations by title yet, even though he was the head basketball decision maker the whole time.

I wasn't aware Pritchard was an option, if he was interested and interviewed, then he's definitely the 1A to Bobby being the 1st.

I hope Bobby gets a nice raise even though he doesn't get the President title. I once got hired by someone who needed my skills and I did everything he asked for and more. When he left the company, I became the head, took his office and did everything he did and more, but only got a small raise, nowhere near what former boss was making just because I was young.

This is so weird. Just tell us if he's the new POBO or not. I wonder if this opens the door for a President who is strictly about the business side of things, while giving Bobby full autonomy over the basketball side.

I mean, it was an obvious red flag to any semi-successful candidate out there when an organization turfed it's most successful and impactful president in team history.

It's a reason why you had failures like Eversely and Casey wanting the job instead

Essentially one-upped the Knicks now in how to screw up a candidate search.

They’ve done it with all MLSE teams. It was a cost cutting move and I doubt they were seriously considering hiring anybody else.
