Some Candidates Interviewed By Raptors Were Critical Of Recent Roster Decisions

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Aug 19, 2025 6:37 pm

The Toronto Raptors decided to retain Bobby Webster as their lead basketball executive to replace Masai Ujiri rather than hiring an external candidate above him as president. Webster will be on a less expensive contract than Ujiri's $15 million base annual salary. Webster certainly has his own opinions on building out the roster, but he and Ujiri worked in tandem and shared some of the same visions.

Sources tell TSN that some of the external candidates who interviewed for the president position were critical of recent roster decisions made by Ujiri and the front office. The Brandon Ingram trade in February was described by one candidate as a "desperate Hail Mary."

The Raptors acquired Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans for Bruce Brown Jr., Kelly Olynyk, Indiana's top-4 protected pick in 2026 and a 2031 second round pick. Toronto subsequently signed Ingram to a three-year, $120 million extension.

The Raptors have Ingram, Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett and Jakob Poeltl all under long-term contracts.

The present "vision" isn't working...so why wouldn't you want a new perspective?

We haven’t even seen IQ, Barrett, Barnes, and Yak healthy together yet. BI hasn’t even played a single game. It’s premature to say this isn’t working.

Most outsiders would agree this roster is at best a play in contender.

Since their peak in 2019, the organization has had a below .500 winning percentage. I'd say that is a pretty good outliner for it not working.

I don't understand how you can come to that conclusion, considering there isn't a single player left from that roster. You do know it takes time to build a team and see what works, right? In two of the seasons you mentioned, the team was deliberately tanking, and in another, they were going through a full reshuffle, trading away starters and bringing in new players. Yes, the Pascal, OG, Scottie, and Fred team didn't work, but we don't know about this new one yet.
