Mets Trade Meyers, Coles For Cubs' Pagan
5th January, 2008 - 2:18 pm
Yahoo.com - The Mets on Saturday acquired outfielder Angel Pagan from the Cubs for righthander Ryan Meyers and outfielder Corey Coles.

Pagan is returning to the Mets' organization for a second stint. The Cubs originally acquired Pagan from New York for cash on January 25, 2006.

In 71 games with Chicago last season, the 26-year-old Pagan batted .264 with four homers and 21 RBI. [READ]

I really couldnt care less about this trade, but who knows maybe there is a team that likes Pagan and we can use him.

Solid trade, this way if Alou gets hurt the Mets would call up Pagan instead of Gomez who should play the whole year in AAA.

:o

I don't agree. Gomez was decent last year and he absolutly deserves a shot. "whole year at AAA - that's going too far"

Still, this is a rather unexciting trade.

Pagan may turn out to be what Ben Johnson was for us last year. only minaya was stupid to trade Bell and Ring to get him. Pagan was cheap to get and he helps our depth. SAFE Deal for Omar!!

come on man, you know it's not always in the stats.

Gomez was called up only because Milledge was hurt, it was his first time in the majors, he's young and on June 1st he was hitting 167. (yikes)

by June 27th he was hitting 270 - a nice turnaround and a good month for the kid.

Then he began to slip, his average slipped to 232 by the end of the year.

But he had a good month, that's something.

link

Also, Gomez has 12 stolen bases (he has 29 hits, 8 walks), 2 homers, no tripples so it was 27 hits with a chance to add a steal and 8 walks - 35 opportunities, 12 SBs.

Reyes, by comparison had 167 hits with an opportunity to steal, and 77 walks for 244 chances and 78 Stolen Bases.

Gomez, (granted it's a much fewer appearances), actually stole more bases and at a better percentage per opportunity than Reyes. Give Gomez a starting spot and he should steal over 50 bases, maybe in the 60-70 range.

Now, he won't get a starting spot unless he can bring his average up, but my point is - the Kid absolutly deserves a look. I disagree with BNO who says Gomez should stay in AAA.

I like Gomez, and I'd put him on the 25 man roster this year. I think Gomez gets the position over Pagan, however, if Gomez struggles, and if Alou gets hurt (which he does almost every year) - then I'd bring Pagan up, and maybe give F-Mart a look.

he won't still 60 bases if his OBP is .290. he has potential, but at this point he's downright overmatched in the majors.

I remember when a kid named Jose Reyes was overmatched in the Majors too.

I'm just saying that it's WAY to early to say what you're saying about CarGo. Give him another 2 years before you give up on him.

i'm not giving up on anyone. i'm disagreeing with your assessment of his season. it's not too early to say someone's overmatched AT THIS POINT. what is IS too early to do is to compare him to jose reyes.
