Heat Unlikely To Use Waive-And-Stretch Before Deadline

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Aug 28, 2025 4:26 pm

The Miami Heat are leaning against using the waive-and-stretch provision before Friday's deadline.

If the Heat were to waive-and-stretch Terry Rosier, for example, they would stretch his $26.7 million expiring contract to an $8.9 million cap hit in each of the next three seasons. The Heat actually could just waive Rozier and create an additional $1.7 million of room below the tax line because only $24.9 million of Rozier’s $26.6 million salary.

The Heat are already under the luxury tax following their trade of Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets. The Heat are about $1.7 million under the luxury tax threshold and about $7.2 million below the punitive first apron of $195.9 million. Because of their trade for Norman Powell, they cannot exceed the first apron.

The Heat were a luxury tax in each of the past two seasons.

Why would they stretch him? He'll be off their books next summer. It's not like they need the cap space to sign player-X and can only get there by stretching Rosier. If they really don't want to play him and they don't want him on their bench, they can buy him out. Take the hit this season when nothing real is on the line.

The Lillard stretch only made sense because of the Giannis component; The Beal stretch was foolish from the beginning and hamstrung the PHX roster for the next five season... But Rosier is on an expiring deal that (worst case) comes of the books next summer and (best case) is packaged with other assets for something real. Stretching him would be ludicrous!

Waive-and-stretch should only be used in the most dire of emergencies. There is no emergency in MIA.

I'm definitely not confident, but maybe he can bounce back a little bit this season after a fairly tumultuous year and increase his value, if only as filler and potentially getting back a young player or a second or two depending on deal.
And another not confident statement, I always think what if they could get Zion and get him in shape? For Rosier, Jazquez, Jovic and some highly protected picks, could it be worth the gamble? The fit in the frontcourt would be not good with Bam and Were, but Miami needs to get a game changer and stop relying on getting just good players in the middle of the first round.
